Not sure that NDAs wash when law enforcement is involved.
At the same time, you're immediately put in a tough spot if you're unsure of what to do which is most likely why he wanted to speak with some at Apple and/or a lawyer. Do I give everything up and risk losing my job, or what?

Also, just because its law enforcement, doesn't give them the right to just search someone's property for very little to no reason. They're not above the law...they're there to enforce the law using legal means (proper policies and procedures).
CBP does have the right to search someone's property if they are entering the country. They don't need a reason. Fourth Amendment protections don't apply at ports of entry. It's like that with pretty much any border services agency in any country. They have the right to search someone's property when you enter a country.
It’s not that simple.  Requesting access to people’s passwords and data goes beyond what was intended.

No one has any problem with them searching for drugs or weapons at the border.

How would you like going to China and having all your phone and laptop contents copied and reviewed?  Do you have any “personal” photos or videos on there?  If it’s a business visit, I hope you don’t have anything confidential...

What happens if you work for a company that has defense contracts?  It doesn’t matter if it’s a family vacation, sometimes you need access to your work if something comes up.

People have all kinds of things that should be private unless a crime has been suspected of being committed, and that data should be going (requested) through the courts.
Funny thing that. I have been to China multiple times, and been asked for passwords and social media info exactly ZERO times.

    Which hunt!

if it’s good for the goose then it must be good for the gander right? You not a bunch of hypocrites are you?
No, since we don’t sell tech to Iran.
You mean not anymore allegedly. F-14’s Iran-Contra. When it’s convenient the US is more than happy to break it own sanctions, and if caught put on a show trial then grant clemency to yhe scapegoats after a couple years.

With so many lawsuits against Apple for intellectual property theft. I am starting to believe that Apple are thieves instead of innovators. Should I keep buying products from Apple and am I aiding their continued thefts in pursuit of profits?

Don't buy them. Buy a knockoff Apple product instead.
Why would I punish myself like that?

  • Intel officials believe that ARM Macs could come as soon as 2020

Microsoft has Windows on ARM now, with a 32-bit software compatibility layer, so virtualization or even Windows on top of one of these new machines isn't out of the question
One thing that nobody is talking about though is compatibility with Intel software. Sure Windows and some software will run on A series chips. But what about the Mac software that is coded to run on Intel? Are they going to run a Blue Box/Yellow Box strategy for a while? It took years before all critical software was ported from PPC to Intel. Some never was and there were a fair number of people who  refused to update their OS for years after Apple dropped Rosetta, because they did not dare lose the old software they depended on. Any idea what Apple is going to do for them?
Move on or get left behind. The backwards compatibility at the expense of moving forward is a Microsoft thing that resulted in the mess that is the Windows world.

  • Third-party USB-C Lightning cables made official at CES by Griffin

I don’t quite get why releasing 3rd party lightning - usb c cables was an issue. 3rd party lightning-USB A cables have obviously been around forever, and USB C is just a different form factor for usb 3.

That said, they’re really of limited use. Peter Schiller’s hallucinations aside, the world runs on USB A. The only benefit is to be able to directly plug into a MacBook Pro, but since the first accessory most people buy is a usb C-A dongle, even that isn’t much of a benefit
Huh.  I'm looking at the Dell notebook that I was assigned at work as a replacement for my desktop PC (as were the hundreds of other employees at my company).  There is no USB-A port, just 3 USB-C ports.  The tipping point has been reached.  USB-A will be around for a long time, but it's losing its dominance.

(Having said that, I agree with the first point.  What took so long to have an "official" third-party option?)
Outside of the MacBooks, that's the only computer I've seen or heard of with no USB A ports. I have seen others with USB C ports, but they're pretty uncommon, so you can't say the tipping point has been reached. I was at the Apple store the other day, and aside from dongles, had a hard time finding *any* USB C accessories. I think I found 1 USB C flash drive. When my son asked for a new flash drive, I searched for a good UBS A/C model and only found a few that were either horribly over priced or, in the case of the one on Apple's site have persistent problems overheating.

Beyond that, *Every* charging station I have ever seen uses USB A. I just took a trip - The hotel has a USB A port on the night stand. the airport has USB A charging ports. The rental car (and my car) only has USB A ports. The battery packs sold at the airport have USB A ports. (and except for the MacBook bricks, every charger sold by Apple has UBS A.) Go into Best Buy and try to find a USB C charger - you can't.

As I said, the world runs on USB A, and except for MacBooks, it works just fine.

Just because it works just fine doesn’t mean we should not look for improvements. With type-C I get power delivery for faster charging, and I can travel with just the MacBook charger in my bag and still be able to charge all my devices at their maximum charge rate.
