Um what are you talking about? The stuff he listed was right......and what we got on this new PMG4. He didn't pretend to have a release date for them, just told us what he was testing. SO what if Apple gave him 2 prototypes? That's probably usual, or he just wants to throw Apple off in the process. The processor speeds were right, the MPC7450 variant using SOI right, same mobo stuff right, all models full 2 MB L3 Cache that's right. Sure time was right on the release date but Dorsal gives us the skinny on what is coming. People like you is what keeps good information away from these boards. Maybe he doesn't know exactly what we'll get or when it's coming but he gives us a look at what we can expect in the future.
Dorsal M makes one post and there are six pages in which maybe a quarter of it discusses the speculation and the rest is insulting or a discussion of credibility.
Is there any way we could curtail the latter, or move those discussions to another thread? With this kind of reception, is it no wonder that s/he posts so seldom?

Well, I haven't posted in this thread since before the updated Power Macs but I'd like to offer my apology to the thread participants in general. A few pages back someone jumped all over me for what he perceived as an attack on Dorsal (I guess). I should've just ignored him or zinged him with a subtle one-liner, but...when someone tells me to STFU I generally don't react well. Call it a tempermental weakness.
Anyway, I want to clarify my stance on Dorsal so everyone at least knows where I am/was coming from.
1. I don't dislike Dorsal or the fact that he posts in this forum. I think it is nice to have someone who at a minimum doesn't wreak of BS when they post their "confirmed" info.
2. That said, I think the vast majority of posters in these kind of threads put too much stock in what Dorsal says. Predictions are never made and the machines being tested (I don't doubt he tests hardware) cover such a broad spectrum of capabilities... to be honest, it's pretty unlikey he *won't* be right about at least some of it. Though I'm usually skeptical of his posts on hardware, JD is right on this count IMO. There is nothing Dorsal mentioned that hadn't been speculated about many times during the weeks that led up to MWSF / his post.
3. In fact, I think because Dorsal always "sees" such a wide array of configurations, that's all the more reason to take what's posted with a grain of salt. He's probably posting things that he's seen over the course of several weeks, not say one particular week. It seems to me that the *only* time Dorsal posts is when there are mutiple machine types. IMO this is probably his way of cloaking the company he works for, since Apple sends specific configurations to specific companies so they can know generally where a leak is coming from. The more configurations he lists, the harder it is for them to know....
4. Finally I think something that often gets lost is that a prototype is just that. Just because there are enough chips / components to make a few prototypes, doesn't mean that's the configuration Apple is planning on. Or if it is, that we'll get them anytime soon. In fact, it could be the case that Motorola and Apple has all the errata and such worked out of their next generation chip / mobo stuff...but if they can't be fabbed in large numbers...well you know the drill.
In short I think it's quite possible given Motorola's poor health that the next generation of PM could be totally speced out and ready to roll design-wise, but is stuck behind a fabrication bottleneck at MOT.
But given recent articles from Rothenburg and rumorings from respectable sites like Architosh I can admit that there is reason enough to speculate ad nauseum about the hopefully-upcoming G5. I just hope we can do it a little more rationally is all.
Hey MacJunkie, I just saw on nvnews.net that somebody has hacked both GeForce4 Ti and MX cards into Quadro versions......might be a step in the right direction for those Mac Quadro DCC cards you want so bad.
[quote]p.s. - How much would it take to convince you to port EV and/or it's sequels to Windows? It's literally the thing i miss most about the Mac platform

Acquire the Mac emulator Basillisk II (Windows and *NIX versions available) and a Quadra ROM file. You'll be able to play EV and EVO on it quite nicely. However, it won't run EV: Nova. Playing swoop on it requires Jedi powers (it runs waaaay too fast).
Why keep this thread alive when Dorsal should just make a new thread, without 6 layers of tripe?
Why do you all have so much faith in Dorsal anyway? When I was a mod, there were other posters I saw with a lot more credibility. Dorsal was far from the top of my list of credible resources.

Well crumudgen Eugene, I am so glad you are no Longer a mod. Dorsal is god-like, second only to the mighty K-Man himself.
Eugene has a point. I see no profit in keeping a thread going if all it's going to be is a series of bumps.
Dorsal has proven to be capable of posting new topics when he has something to say. In tandem, I think it's reasonable to assume that when he has something to say, he'll post.
If there's no longer any active discussion in this thread, it should die. FH is already too cluttered.

I'm asking because I don't know, actually.
