I'm just as guilty as anyone else. I started clicking "check for update" at 10am and finally started the download at 10:10am. It took an hour for me to download ios5 and 3 tries to get it installed.

So far so good on an iphone 4.

I've been using Google Active Sync for calendar, email and contacts but decided to give icloud a try. It doesn't seem to be pushing my emails as fast as Google did, but it could be due to the server load today. I'll re-evaluate it after a few weeks have gone by.

Now that the dust has settled for a while, may I suggest this? I always download any iOS Firmware through the iClarified links:

    iPhone:

    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750

    iPad:

    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=8500

(They come off Apple servers anyway). Then I Option-Restore, then Restore From Backup.

Note you have to use Firefox to download those IPSWs because Safari by default expands them (they are just zip files).

I Was sick yesterday -- so I guess I missed all the fun/ All but 3 of our iPads have been running iOS 5 for a month or so... so not much needed there. I just updated one of our 3 computers that are capable of running Lion -- no problem.

Does the iTunes available to the general public support iTunes Match?

We have about 15,000 songs across 3 computers. I was finally able to get them matched/uploaded on the latest beta version of iTunes.

It worked pretty good except it missed a lot of cover art and didn't recognize/eliminate dups.

If iTunes Match is not, yet, available, I would expect massive iCloiud outages when it hits the street.

First, according to my experience, it's not image downloading that causes 3200 problem, but update process. I've successfully downloaded image in about 1 hour. But then during updating I got 3200 error numerous times (and other codes as well that I don't remember). It's rather caused by overload on some gs.apple.com server used for some authorization.

Second, thoughts about choosing time of low load because of users going sleep or to work are not much correct - when Europe is going sleep then US is back from work, when US is going sleep then Europe is getting up and Asia is after work - it's global game.

Third, after updating to IOS 5 my iPhone didn't restore from iTunes backup (because "backup session is not closed susccessfully"). I've ended up with clear IOS 5. I can't restore from iTunes, can't restore from iCloud because there's not backup there. Only option to configure as new left. Any suggestions? iTunes for Windows 7.

Final thought: user experience when comes to IOS updating problems is not the way Apple got us used to - cryptic error codes, inconsistent and not relevant troubleshooting steps on support pages (USB concentrators, IP packet sizes...), leaving user with iTunes backup that is not suitable to restore...

And you know for a fact that it wasn't Microsoft and Amazon servers that were buckling under demand?

When updating my iPhone 4 to iOS5, I get an Error 3173 message. After 3 attempts which all failed, my iPhone no longer appears under Devices in iTunes. \

Now that this is all over with, let's also be happy that we have this problem. It's a good thing that there are this many iOS devices out there.

On another note, I really wish I could put Newstand in a folder but it won't let me because it basically is a folder.

I updated yesterday evening, 8pm eastern time. Wouldn't go through the first time, tried second time & got iOS5 (but it took hours). And for some reason, I have NONE of my 900 contacts on my 3GS.

I tried to update my 6 month old iPad2 to IOS 5 yesterday afternoon and received the 3214 error message. I called 800 APL CARE and was told there were server problems and that I should try again. I did try and ended up with everything wiped out on my iPad. No serial number, no amount of memory and no operating system id. I called back and was told that indeed the servers had become very overloaded and that I should try and restore my iPad. I tried that, while the rep waited on the phone. No luck with the restore. Another error message and no progress. He then told me that I should "wait several hours" and try when the servers were not busy. I asked him if that was Apple's official response. He stated that millions of users were trying to upgrade their devices and this was the result. I asked if there was any other solution since my iPad was now dead. He stated there was no solution other than wait and that was Apple's official response and solution.

I have an iPhone 4 and an iTouch and will wait several days before attempting to update them.

Not Tim Cook's finest hour. No a good way to get started.

    Sad.

Just keep trying, dude. You'll eventually succeed. Your frustration is understandable, and I agree Apple could have handled this better. But this is the mother of all upgrades. Be patient. Trust me - you'll be delighted when it is over. I am.

900 numbers, eh? Well, the App store does have this policy against porn. Maybe this is related?

3173? That I haven't seen. But don't worry. I've helped upgrade dozens and dozens of devices over the last 15 hours. Whatever the error, just keep retrying.

Do not let someone talk you into putting the device into DFU mode until you previously had problems with it. It's unnecessary.

I disagree. This is par for the course whenever there has been a massive upgrade. Apple is great at support in their stores. Outside of the stores, meh. Cryptic error codes? Nothing new. You can expect that from any vendor.

But we have to understand this is the mother of all upgrades. Keep trying and you'll eventually succeed.

I want to take my NYT out of Newstad cause now I have to TAP 2x to get to it-

Is there a way to put the NYT app as a standalone anymore? Frustrating.

    Is this progress?

I see all these suggestions that Apple should stagger the release and their sever should be setup to handle the load. There is no way any company can handle this type of load on a server.

If Apple were to stagger the release, we would then hear the complaints about how you were not first to get your upgrade.

Absolutely, and please report all the real bugs that turn up, not just overloading the update service.

Downloaded iOS 5 for iPad2, iPhone 4 and Lion 10.7.2 for my MacBook and installed all within 2 hours. No errors and bugs on my devices. Hardly a beta. iOS 5 is firkin awesome. Started the download 5 minutes after Apple released it. Everyone in North America was sleeping so that's probably why I got it fast.

I'll still have to JB though. Not because of lacking features but because the carriers here down't allow tethering.

Just roll it out more slowly, just like New Year. But don't start in New Zealand.

What puzzled me was that somebody as smart as Jay Freeman stating "Apple's servers are swamped, and failing half the requests".

    Only half?
