I agree that the entry-level one should have been priced at $299. The difference between that and $329 is simply margin that Apple could have afforded to give away. I'm absolutely certain that they will sell fewer of these at $329 than they would have at $299. That's not rocket science. But what they just did was let the competition hang around because now the buying decision isn't as clear-cut as it would have been at $299.
OK you brought up and (I think) answered something I have yet to see but wondered about. I use a 2010 15" MBP and an external Apple monitor and suspect if I get a new MBP (which I am close to doing so I can get 16 GIGs of RAM and twice the benchmark speed) ) I might be better off with the non retina since I use the external monitor most of the time. I don't keep my lid closed though I use it as a second monitor to keep Mail open while I work. Add in I like changing out my own RAM and drives ... So having seen that set up you describe (i.e. wasting the rMBP) do you think I'm right?
No they aren't.
And Apple isn't thrilling too many people with an iPad 4 so soon, either.
I don't care about Surface & Key Lime Pie, and neither does any other potential tab buyer.
Why is that?
Because, say it with me: THERE ISN'T A TAB MARKET -- THERE'S AN iPAD MARKET!!!!!
For Apple to clearly panic like this on both ends of the tab spectrum, is -- ....
Words fail.
But not as big of a fail as this "iPad Mini" will be.
And that noise you hear?
It's Bezos & Lucifer clinking glasses as the King Of Pernition delivers on his end of the bargain.
Sun Tzu: He who exercises no forethought but makes light of his opponents is sure to be captured by them.
Or, in short - never underestimate your enemy.
Some potential tab buyers care about non-Apple solutions. Some even like it.
I'm quite surprised at the high entry level price here. Was expecting a maximum of $299 and upwards. I hope its high basic cost doesn't price it out of the market. That could be very bad for Apple! Not such an issue for me at the moment though(the price of the iPad mini that is) its the new full-size iPad I'm interested in a big way here!
I'm really surprised that for some an additional $30 over the life of a product that could last 2-3 years is such a big deal.
I'm with you. I said it was weird but I didn't fuss or complain about an extra $30. I was just making an observation. I didn't expect rants over $30. I'm with you and I think that it makes pretty good business sense.
Then again, some people are loosing their minds over the fact that Apple refreshed the iPad after 6 months. So I don't know why anything surprises me anymore...
What's with the epidemic of people writing loosing for losing on AI?
Maybe they should quote Shakespeare, instead: "Cry havoc! and let loose * the dogs of war, that this foul deed shall smell above the earth with carrion men, groaning for burial."
* This is sometimes quoted as: "let slip ** the dogs..."
** Of course, If you're from Pittsburgh, it would be: slippy
I expect this thing will be $299 in most places before Christmas- could be even less on Black Friday/Cyber Monday .
Nope.

I seriously doubt this will happen at all. The processor is ONE generation behind. There is ZERO competition in any space.

I love my "new iPad" retina display. I love my iPhone 5 (and iPhone 4S before it) retina display.
Never ever in a trillion years will I go back to a non-retina display like the iPad 2. It is so obviously inferior to me that frankly I'm embarassed by Apple today. This is a serious downgrade.
Let's be honest. Apple felt rushed to release the iPad mini to head off competition from the Google Nexus and Amazon Fire. Today we witnessed Apple introducing a product that takes a step back so they can block the competition.
But they even screwed that up. The resolution on the Nexus and Fire are higher than this POS. *AND* they are charging at $100 more? The gall.
If I owned AAPL today I would *sell sell sell*.
There was no way Apple could include retina display with a resolution that is compatible for the current application. They had to double the resolution (compared to iPad2) to make it compatible, which is even a higher pixel density then the iPhone Retina. All ipad apps with the Mini are 100% compatible and optimized for the screen area. Most Andriod apps are stretched phone application because they need to be compatible with many different size tablets. The iPad mini pixel density is higher then the iPad 1 and 2. You maybe positive surprised by this.
Also I can't figure out why people can't see what great software they produce for iPad (eduction, text books, music instrument apps, music, ibook store etc, iCloud, email solution, iPhoto, iMovie etc). Not talking about the super quality hardware (aluminum back, very stable hardware and OS, etc)

If we're strictly speaking about pricing... Apple has sold PLENTY of iPads at $500+
Hell... even when the iPad 2 dropped to $399... they only represented something like 18% of iPad sales... meaning 82% of iPads were the more expensive models ($500-830)
But what is happening here is Apple entering new territories... both a smaller iPad and a new price category.
Someone might not even consider the $499 iPad... and maybe $399 was too pricey as well. But $329 might hit the spot.
You're right... $329 is certainly higher than that magical price of $299.... but $329 is less than $399.
You're still getting "an iPad" with a great screen, the proven app ecosystem, and all the benefits of the iPad. It's just smaller and cheaper.

Sell AAPL, you kidding? haha that's the dumbest sentence in a post crammed full of dumb sentences.
This thing will sell like hot cakes and help push AAPL over $1000, I will and have put money on it.
Shrinking the 1024 x 768 into 9.7 inches will increase the perceived image quality. It won't look anywhere near as pixelated as the original iPad.
What may be causing Apple to sell the iPad mini for this higher than expected price, might be the very high-tech expensive to produce display panel. Once production volumes go up they might be able to sell the basic version for below the $300 mark.
We're all Apple fans here, that's why we're -- here ....
But we all know, perhaps better than the non-Apple faithful, that not everything's a home run.
You know "Cult Of Mac", right?
They kiss Apple's ass so much, it's embarassing to see themselves described as "journalists".
Well, here's what they have to say about the iPad Mini ....
The iPad Mini was announced today, and frankly, it missed the mark.
The iPad Mini will simply have no effect on non-Apple users.
Apple needed to go $299 or less to make the iPad Mini seep into consumers heads and play devil's advocate.
At $329, that simply isn't going to happen ....
And I agree.
Wholeheartadly.
I looks nice & all, but $330?!?
NOBODY'S GONNA BUY THAT.
Just accept that sooner rather than later & it'll hurt a lot less.

Take that Gruber!
Other things no one has brought up yet ...
- no iTunes 11 (not ready?)
- the new "new iPad" is still "aluminium and black" whereas the iPad mini is "slate and black" WTF?
- not one "hands on" that I've seen mentions anything about the smaller bezels (is it harder to pick up or hold? yes? No?)
- no reviewers mention one of the most obvious things ... thumb typing in portrait mode. (works? Yes? No?)

According to the specs on this page:
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP649
Even though the regular 15" MBP only has 1440 x 900 native resolution, the Thunderbolt port offers full 2560 x 1600

Fingerprint-gate had already been used?
OTOH that's approx. 10% of the sales price and as such is a big chunk of "margin" when people squeal if the margin drops only a couple %....
I think Apple just put all their products on a Oct refresh timeline
There was the A6 and now there's the A6X so it is in fact 2 generations old

Except that one can no longer tell if this is a product that could last 2-3 years...
In fact, it could very well be upgraded significantly in 6 months. I could even see retina version of this iPad mini in 6 months.
