Hmmm. Let me take a crack at it... They're a California-based company and maybe they are proud of the California culture?
I don't think the name Mavericks has so much to do with expecting you to be enamored by California and surfing as much as it has to do with them being able to choose a name that they like for a product that they created.
In the context of big cats, the Sea Lion joke was brilliant, not tacky. And for the record, my jaw didn't drop when they announced that the next generation of OS X would be called Mavericks. I think it is an appropriate name and sounds a hell of a lot better than "Gazoobee" (which is quite tacky by the way).
I love the California Culture reference and the tongue-in-cheek Sea Lion chuckle. Yet, California is rich in words that don't coincide with Top Gun and thus Maverick gives people that impression.
They could have called it OS X Rebel and people would complain about a homage to James Dean. I was half expecting OS X Venice, OS X Malibu, OS X Yosemite, etc., after the Big Wave reference.
As an OS, it's clearly a vast improvement. Everything from Control Center to the Camera app to pretty much everything else is an improvement. There are so many new and improved features, this is really a huge move forward.
As to the design, I'm sort of torn. One minute I look at it and think, "Wow, love it." The next minute I'm thinking, "I'm not so sure, that's a lot of white." I can't make a judgement until I actually see it in action for real, though.
Too bad you don't get to decide whose opinions aren't welcome. I've been a die-hard Apple user since my first Mac in 1991. I've never bought another computer brand in my life. I've never owned another brand of smart phone. And iOS 7 is the first iOS that I won't be upgrading to. There are some interesting (if not essential) features, but the design this article calls "colorful," I call garish. It's utterly, utterly horrible, from the icons to the font to the ubiquitous boring white background. I have no love for the much-derided skeumorphism, but give me that anyday over constant, incessant, boring white. And their photos on apple.com present it all on a white phone! Bad idea. This OS is easily the worst looking product to emerge from Apple since I've been using their stuff.
Well I for one love it! An OS that is fitting for a beautiful bit of hardware (iPhone 5). I actually like a lot of the design choices used anyway, translucency, matte looking colour, white (I have a white iPhone) and I think the new app switch will actually make people 'want' to use it more often because it just looks cool. I know people who just don't care about app switching, they just find the app and re-open it..
I love the fact that the OS makes use of the full screen in Safari and elsewhere. Sure it already does it in iOS6 but it looks more refined and used more often in iOS7. I mean, it's still a tiny screen, we need to make full use of it, I like how everything seems to recline away leaving just what you need to see.
My one gripe? I suppose I didn't expect the icon / home page basic look to change at all but ... it might have been nice for them to "think different" in this case. I wouldn't have minded is all. It's still fine, and the way the wallpaper looks 3D is a very cool flourish. The moving wallpaper very cool too even though it's not a new concept. It definitely suits iOS though.
That said, I'll really know once I get it on my phone, and especially looking forward to trying it on the Retina iPad Mini (when they finally announce the thing!).

It'll grow on you... more importantly, you'll grow on it!
It is flat in plenty of ways. It's certainly flatter than it used to be. The design doesn't have to be completely flat in order to have elements of flat design. I think you're hung up on some absurd idea that there is only one way to do things within any artistic style. Contrary to that, there were many painters who used the realist style, the impressionist style, and the expressionist style but you can still easily tell two painters apart if you're familiar with art.
Minimal, clean and transparent come to mind before "flat". And because of this new design, the overall look and feel becomes more dimensional, vibrant and exciting!
I don't see the "Pastel Colors" that some here are referring to, maybe they are confused by the colors in the wallpaper or the icons that permeate through the opaque background.
Based on those standards, can we have Tallest Skil banned as well?
I understand that your comment was made in jest due to you being handed your ass by him on a number of occasions but, to answer your questions in all seriousness, it's because he does one other thing that both you and the other poster do not:

I think I got almost everything I wanted from today's announcement:

Maps on OSX
Access to 3D Maps API
Siri enhancements
iWork enhancements (coming later)
iWork parity between iOS and OSX
iWork on Windows (via iCloud)
More granular access to iOS in general
802.11ac WiFi
The Mac Pro preview was unexpected & looks really good!
I expect to see more and a new FCPX drop soon!
I think an enhanced and cross-platform/iCloud iWorks is a direct shot across the bow of Microsoft -- "Office? Office? We don't need no stinkin' Office!"
Now, if I could just get all the new developer software to download so I can see what's there...
Do I really need to keep a list of the people who have vendettas against me for being proven wrong? Come off it. This is nothing but personal attacks.
I didn't attack you personally. I requested the banning of a troll.
And the reason I don't like you has nothing to do with any interaction between us. I genuinely don't recall a time where you've proven me wrong and even had you done so, it wouldn't make me dislike you. The reason I don't like you is because of the way you treat everyone who says something to your disliking. I welcome disagreement. What I don't welcome is spiteful comments from grumpy, power hungry ex-mods.

Also, I edited my other post. Why don't you go back and read it.
Also hilarious: snippy retorts based on the premise that I had even been around to read the post before you'd edited it, nay, before right now, coming back to the thread to read your reply that you'd edited it. Love it.
Posters on MacRumors hate it so I have a feeling it's going to be a big hit. I mean when's the last time anyone at Apple got a standing ovation other than Steve when he came back from medical leaves.

Anyone here posting anything negative whatsoever about the new look is a paid troll!
Your opinions are not welcome!!

Quit with the crap already.
It is NOTHING like it.

It's pathetic that you aren't even trying to listen to yourself.

We'll see what all those translucencies look like on black iPhones...
That's a lot of processor juice to do something you could easily do by looking to the top center of the screen....
As TS would say "citation needed" lol
That's because I don't troll. Also, I edited my other post. Why don't you go back and read it.
