What the new Mac Pro needs is a flat and wide Thunderbolt expansion chassis, designed to sit underneath the MacPro, so that it looks like the Cray-1 (How appropriate, given its number crunching capabilities) !
A Thunderbolt connector underneath the MacPro to invisibly dock with the expansion chassie would come in handy.
Such an expansion chassis would have room for an indeterminate number of expansion HDs, optical drives, even expansion cards.
Also a drawer for tucking away unused connectors, cables, and other small stuff, could be an option (e.g., for $29.99, or $199:) -- make that Eur29.99 or Eur199 including the overseas markup for Europe's Apple Stores), exactly as the service drawers in the bottom of the Cray-1.
I've been thinking the same thing. I was considering making one up in my machine shop, but as I'm not getting the new Mac Pro this year, I decided to wait.
I had the same problem... I was able to bypass it by turning off Safari JavaScript. It disappeared as suddenly as it appeared -- now works as expected.
Yeah, I thought it might be JavaScript.
What are you missing with it turned off. I hate to do that for just one site, even if it's one of my favorites, obviously.

Dick; thanks. Don't have any more crashes here on AI.
Melgross:
1) I don't seem to be missing anything with Java off, you might just want to try it.
2) Posting solely from an iPad is quite a challenge for me; I find the edit window too small to edit out a quote. Doing it in portrait orientation doesn't help. Never mind trying this on an iPhone - to me completely useless. So I usually post from the desktop.

I was missing scottrade.com -- the account with my biggest/oldest (2003) aapl holding. I would just toggle JavaScript whenever I needed it .
I am running iOS 7.1 on my iPad 4 and, currently, all is fine with JavaScript and AI.

Mmmm.... I do a lot of posts from my iPad 4. I always use landscape mode… And do a lot of dictation. I am pretty happy with how everything works.

2003? Excellent time to buy!
Yeah, long story short -- I had been watching AAPL channel between $10 and $20 for years… I bought in @ $17. I didn't know much about the stock market but I knew a lot about Apple and Steve Jobs.

Kate/dictated from my iPad.
Ha! I dictated that last... *Typed/dictated
1) I just cannot get used to dictating to my iPad/Mac. I;m still doing it old school keyboard.
2) Maybe Siri is called Kate? Well, not Siri, but the voiceover in iOS? I have: /Settings/General/Accessibility/Speak Auto-text turned on and she sounds like a Kate to me. It's nice to learn other languages. And the funny thing is; even though it may not have voice support in, say, the Dutch language, the auto speak text feature does.

If there's one person I 'know' who deserves the fruition of buying AAPL at that price it has to be you Dick. Enjoy!
(funny how we can have two discussions going on, on different topics, in the same thread. Each posting while the other is replying to the other discussion.)

Same here. After having Apple in the ,90's, and having done very well with it,I bought in again big time in mid 2004. I'll never forget the price$16.94 a share. Just sorry I didn't buy back earlier. I was thinking of buying back in when the iPod came out. Apple was under $8 then, but chickened out.
Most users have a choice of various external PCI chassis with and with out RAID systems. Plenty of stuff on the market with more to come. Check out this site to keep track of Thunderbolt devices. https://thunderbolttechnology.net/products It's not 100% accurate as to what's on the market, but they update it regularly as new products get announced. I'm sure we'll see a lot more TB 2 chassis coming out. But right now, there is NetStor, Magma, Sonnet and others.
I think it would be cool if they took the MacPro and stuffed a high end i5/i7 instead of the XEON, retained the high speed SSD, and at least 32 or 64G of RAM, Thunderbolt 2, USB 3.0, HDMI, cater to the prosumer and professional that doesn't need the super powerful Workstation on a more limited budget and they might actually be able to make it a little shorter and charge between $1500 and $3000 for a medium level desktop and have something in between the MacMini and the MacPro and call it something like the MacProMini or the MacMiniPro or something clever.

Ah, the xMac. Well, that'll never happen. And for understandable reasons: Apple has 3 desktop models, or families if you will. The Mini, iMac and Pro. And with each family you can upgrade it to your hearts content. Same goes for their laptops. This was decided upon when Steve returned to Apple, he killed every project that didn't make sense (even Apple employees had a hard time explaining the differences between all models) so he wanted one desktop line, and one laptop line. A Consumer and a Prosumer model:
(can't find a better pic to depict this)
So yeah, they did increase the number of models as Apple grew, but they won't make a Pro machine with the i5/i7 CPU.

How can you be so sure they won't do it? Apple does things without warning, and sometimes they do a paradigm shift from what we "expect" them to do. I have an iMac, but if there was a box that was slightly larger than the MacMini but with the guts of an iMac, I would have bought that instead.
If you look at the MacMini, it's much easier to crack open and replace components. It's not as easy to crack open an iMac. I'm sure their own repair personnel would have a much easier time repairing products.
All I can say is that they should consider it. When I converse with others, they like the idea a lot, so I know there are others that would prefer it.
I'm interested to see what they announce next year since they haven't updated the MacMini.
Well, as much as I or other people like Steve Jobs, he sometimes didn't always know what was the best, sometimes he was short sighted in offering too few products to choose from. And what do you think is going to happen when Apple finally ships a larger screen iPhone? It will sell VERY well. So, Apple should offer at least 2 sizes of iPhones.
I actually thought the MacII CX form factor was one of their best designs. It didn't take up too much room, it offered plenty of expansion, etc. I thought that was actually one of their best designs at the time it was available, but a modern day version would be cool. Whether it has PCI slots or not, I still think they need something in between the Mini and the Pro that's a box rather than an iMac.
Sixteen years of people whining about it and Apple hasn’t done it. They’re not doing it. In every fundamental way, it runs contrary to everything they represent in computing.
If the last sixteen years haven’t taught you (third person plural, referring to the people who still want one) anything–if the new Mac Pro hasn’t taught you anything–then at this point I say enjoy waiting for eternity for something that will never come to pass. The xMac is the Big Crunch of computing. Ignorance is bliss, just don’t spill your bliss anywhere that we can see it.
All I can say is that they should consider it.
Oh, should they “consider it”? There’s a novel concept. I’m sure that Apple has never “considered” making a computer that is just a box that has a door on the side with a bunch of crap thrown into it. You know, there are plenty of other companies that make boxes that have a door on the side with a bunch of crap thrown into it.
And what do you think is going to happen when Apple finally ships a larger screen iPhone?
They’ll have finally bowed to the whims of idiots instead of making the best product.
It will sell VERY well.
Among idiots, yeah. So, what, 5% of the market.
So, Apple should offer at least 2 sizes of iPhones.
You know, this was never an issue in the early naughties. Before Apple, all phones were roughly the exact same size. No one whined about selling two sizes. Maybe just stop doing that entirely. You had the standard stupid phone that flipped and then you maybe had a candybar with a keyboard. Throw ‘em all together and those are your “two sizes”, which can’t be compared like that because they’re not the same category. And no, a 4” and 5” phone ARE the same category when they’re designed to do the same things. Unless you want to call “device unusable in the way that every single one of its predecessors for the past 120 years has been usable” a category.
The new Mac Pro really is the future of Workstations. Just like 2 years after the iPhone came out, all phones looked like the iPhone, same will happen with this workstation.
I don't know. It's a bit early to know for sure.
One thing Apple had going for the iPhone was the almost-overnight distribution for the iPhone. Back then, only a handful of Apple galleries existed. (Today, the colloquial term is likely "Apple Stores"). With the AT&T contract, Apple was able to gain access to 1400 retail stores, and millions of existing customers who didn't see the *NEED* a new phone or to pay extra for a data service.
Still, I don't know. There's a video at The Verge which reviews the $8,000 version of the Apple Mac Pro. The reviewer says it's good, but some things are actually quicker (editing movies and raw film footage in Adobe Premier) on last year's model. If you have a couple video streams open, the graphics card drops frames at full resolution.
If your going to spend that kind of money, and looking for a video editing machine, the jury was out. They also didn't like that everything plugged in the back; the wires can make your desk messy. If your spending this kind of cash, you'd think they'd include a bluetooth keyboard and mouse that matches.

Well... HP/Compaq had the iPaq device. But Apple optimized the OS for fingers instead of a stylus.
The Apple iPhone design ismore similar to the iPaq. Apple and HP have had an interesting relationship over the years and probably share employees... Remember when HP made the iPod for Apple because Apple didn't have a contract with Foxconn..?

I do! I’d like to grab one of those from eBay sometime, I think. An Apple product engraved with the HP logo… at Apple’s blessing! " src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Interesting. I have scottrade too, though I use their new app.
Of course, the software AI used isn't Mac compatable, as we see every time we post.
Whoops, crashed as soon as I hit the period. Typing slow as can be. I'll have to try the JavaScript thing. Thanks guys.

Will be interesting to hear about the experiences of those who require an external cage for specialist boards. I myself don't but use Mathematica, do you think that this will benefit - http://reference.wolfram.com/mathematica/OpenCLLink/tutorial/Overview.html ?
