This is where code review and dev testing comes into play.

Cook thought it was "You Too" not "U2".

What "U2-Gate"? The band showed up a played a song and Apple gave away copies of their album.

Neither of which did anyone have to listen to, EVER.

Music tastes are such that a single performer's offering isn't going to please everyone. hardly a "Gate" to any but the eternally outraged.

While this is a serious mistake and an unfortunate one, it should be limited in scope.  It appears that they found the issue rather quickly and pulled the update.  Also, I think the update was not even released until mid morning PDT, I did not even know about it until I saw the story on AppleInsider.  Unfortunately, I did not get the update before it was pulled.  It also seems, at least from the anecdotal reports, that this is limited to iPhone 6 and 6+ devices.  Seriously embarrassing to be sure as it is effecting the newest devices.  I suspect that Apple is working feverishly to get this issue resolved in the most expedient manner possible.  Every OS has had releases that break something.  This is more visible of course since it is Apple and it is the iPhone 6 and 6+.  I would be upset if I have been impacted by this, but I would also know that Apple would be working to get it fixed PDQ.  The good thing is that they noticed the issue and pulled the update very quickly.  I hope this limits the number of people effected.

I empathize with those impacted by this issue.  I hope that Apple releases a fix today and gets this issue resolved.  I know that Samsung and others will try to use this.  However, I don't see how they can talk as they don't even release updates for most of their devices.

You can just re-apply the update using iTunes.

    Download the firmware:

    6+ http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS8/031-07519.20140924.FTHpb/iPhone7,1_8.0.1_12A402_Restore.ipsw

Then connect your phone to iTunes, Command-click the update button (not sure what key on windows) and choose the downloaded file.

This is no longer possible. You will need to restore back down to iOS 8.0. Apple pulled the update so their servers will no longer accept update requests for iOS 8.0.1 (Even for developers)

The non-techy iPhone users are too stupid to apply updates in the first place. You wouldn’t believe the number of people who were still on 1.0.2 after iOS 3 had come out.

“You mean I can install apps too?!”
In all seriousness we can hope this only impacted it a small number of people. I never received a notification or pop up message that a software update was available.

A moderator here had the problem on their iPhone 5s, so my theory is that it has something to do with iPhones that have Touch ID on them.

Didn’t I reply to this already? They’re not smart enough to know there IS an update.

I can see you never took a logic class.

Your assertion is that "every non-tech person who owns an iPhone 6 wouldn't be smart enough to know to do the update to bet burnt."

The sheer numbers (10,000,000+) indicate that has to be at least one non-tech person who did and now has to seek technical support because the can't fix the problem on their own. And, that is the person who I am sad for.

No, it won’t. You are wrong. Backups DO NOT include iOS itself.

If you have an .IPSW file is does restore the previous iOS. Then you can apply the backups of your data.

Don't need the 8.0.1 update for that.

In 3 years with my iPhone 4S on AT&T up to iOS 7.1.2, I never saw "NO SERVICE" and had about 8 Mbps download speeds at home and at work. My brand new iPhone 6 also on AT&T running iOS 8.0 has displayed "NO SERVICE" several times during as many days of ownership. Download speeds on LTE are 1/2 to 1/4 the speed of my 4S at home. At work, I now frequently get "NO SERVICE" or zero data throughput. However, when I'm in a good signal area my download speeds are 2-3 times faster than they were on 4S. So, I've gone from consistently mediocre with the iPhone 4S to wildly fluctuating performance depending on location with my iPhone 6.

That is not what the original poster said. What you are describing does NOT happen with a standard restore. .IPSW files are often deleted when an upgrade is completed. You may or may not have the required file available. Then you need to obtain it from a third party hacker site.

So making the claim “Just restore it from your back up backup” is not what it seems.

I think this 8.0.1 update is superb.

I've never had a phone so secure and private.

You can still update rather than restore, just use the 8.0 firmware

    It's way faster . . .

I work in tech. My Dad and Mom both worked for the pentagon....and my sister also served in the ME. Im fully aware of accountability and responsibility. Its one thing to say Apple screwed up and needs to fix it. Its another to say

Maybe the most glitch-filled launch I can remember, from the Asian language voice-over in the Keynote stream, to the ordering system issues, to (and I dunno if Apple could have prevented this, but embarrassing and reveals they very likely put words into the mouth of paid endorsers who've never seen the product they're rhapsodizing about) the Joan Rivers facebook endorsement from beyond the grave, to "bend gate" (has Apple commented yet?  Is it a thing or not?) to this...

    ....NBD yet (?), but WTF....?
