The nice thing about Mute button is that you can physically see if your phone is muted or not. With software mute, you have to access the system to see it.
Good point there. Turning on the screen in some situations is had news.
If Apple wants to retain my business, they'll keep a 4" size phone. I originally bought the iPhones 3GS, 4, and finally the awkwardly-sized iPhone 6.
For the record, I am 6'3", have large hands, a microbiologist, and have short hair. I prefer the size of the iPhone 5/5S, and would also like to see Apple sell a 4" iPhone 6S.
After 12 days of use, I had to to exchange the iPhone 6 for the 5S. The size of the 6 made me feel like I had to change my lifestyle to fit the function of the phone, rather than be accomadating to how I already used a smart phone. I felt like I was a tool to the phone, rather than the phone being an accessory to me. Additional issues included hand tendon (flexor pollicis) fatigue from excessive thumb-reach due to an over-sized phone, frustrating position of the newly moved Power switch, and scalp hair near my ear being pulled (AKA HairGate) were too annoying for everyday use.
Perfectly happy w/ the size of the 5S. Like many others on here, would like to see a next-generation 4" phone w/ the latest technology.
I think that Apple could get away with offering the premium mini only during the S years-Those who do like the 4 inch size would know to upgrade every other year.
I like this idea. This way the 6S mini becomes the mid-tier phone when the 7 comes out, and then the "free" phone when the 7S comes out.
However, I don't think they will put the 6 into a plastic case. I don't think people will buy a $100 iPhone made out of plastic, when they can get a pretty good one in the 5S for free. Then again, maybe switching Android customers would.
But, if the "mini" user can only upgrade every other year, then why not start it off as "last years model" to begin with? Introduce the 6 mini as the $100 phone, using the 6 technology. It then becomes the free phone the following year when they introduce the 7 mini, which becomes the new $100 phone.
Plastic was an interesting experiment, but if they swap out the 5C with the 5S guts as I suspect, it will be 3 years of colored plastic (the typical lifecycle of an iPhone design). I feel like Apple was just buying time while they expanded their ability to provide quality metal phones across the product line. Now that they can, they will use tech (as before) and screen size to differentiate the price points. Perhaps they will even offer the free phone in colored anodized aluminum like the iPod Touch to further distinguish it.
On thing is for sure, it will be interesting to see what Apple does ...
I was at Costco last night buying my new iPhone (finally!) and the rep there told me that there are three new models coming this September -- 6S, 6S and 6C. This person was surprised that they C was coming back again but it sounded right to me.
I don't think this person realized what they were saying but it was cool to get an early scoop. No specifics beyond that but I'm sure if I asked nicely, I could get more.

Rep at Costco don't know shit. If you're in this forum, this is where you get the most updated information, not from some random person in Costco.
Let me tell you, even Apple employees, high profile ones don't know shit about what's coming.

Your business alone is not good enough for redesigning the phone from ground up for 4": new board, new case, new chassis and R&D. It's not like you just slap iPhone 6 components into 4" chassis and call it the day. Every product coming out from Apple has to go through tremendous amount of design, R&D and testing. Why would Apple want to spend so much resource just to cater a minority group instead of just rebadging the existent one like 5S in a plastic case with NFC chip?
Glad to see that common sense has partially returned to Apple.
A 4.2" iPhone would be great. Make it thicker if necessary to increase battery life. Let's see 24 hours battery life. They should put the latest chip and technology in, though. Get rid of those bezels, too. Metal case. No jutting camera. No ugly antenna bands.
All set.
I'd love to see better battery life on the iPhones. I purchased the 6+ because the reviews said it had better battery life (as did friends who have it). So far, I've avoided getting a battery case with this one.
However, I don't think they will put the 6 into a plastic case. I don't think people will buy a $100 iPhone made out of plastic, when they can get a pretty good one in the 5S for free. Then again, maybe switching Android customers would.
Uh....iPhone 5C and 4S remind you anything because that's what Apple did before: put the 5 into a plastic case and called it 5C? Did people justify to buy 4S for $100 less instead of 5C before?
But turning on the screen to see if the volume is mute is quite inconvenience
Sorry, typo, I meant "bad news." We're in agreement. The hardware is switch can be much more subtle/concealed, which is a benefit. I do like the option to just mute for a set amount of time though, in the software solution.

I think you mean 5C and 3G/S. The 4S was a glass sandwich. That was then, this is now. Apple will likely have three years of a plastic phone if the 5S is transplanted into a plastic case. So only Apple knows how well a plastic phone sells. But are people really going to pay $100 for what by appearance is the same as they can get for free, even if it has slightly better tech?
Either way, Apple doesn't really do plastic anymore. If they have the capacity to cheaply do a metal phone going forward, why wouldn't they? Many were convinced Apple offered the 5C to free up its ability to produce the 5S, rather than a lower priced phone with the same manufacturing requirements. Now that the 5S is retiring, the plants that make them are free to make another metal phone. By the iPhone 7, they may have even greater capacity to manufacture metal phones from top to bottom. Who knows. My guess is they won't do plastic again at the mid-level.

Anyone else doesn't know jack.
Sure, agreed. I was just sharing what a non-Apple employee casually told me more than once during our conversation. I'm not surprised by any of it and this person didn't mention the 4-inch model.
I miss having my phone fit easily in a dress shirt pocket. I don't have a purse, hoodie or cargo pants and think it's rude to set down a phone in public.
Stack 4 credit cards together and that's the size I want!
Electronics that small would be more expensive, so call it the iPhone Air and raise the price instead of "Mini" for a lower price. Or call it "Edition" and charge even more

WTF are you talking about? You brought up iPhone 6 rebadging into 6C as a bad idea with the justification of 5S for $100 less as a better deal. BUT that was exactly what Apple did for iPhone 5 to 5C vs 4S for $100 less.
Again check you eyes: 6 to 6C is 4.7" device while 5S is 4" one. Same scenario: 5 to 5C is 4" device vs 4S 3.5".

Apple do plastic on iPhone 6C which is a rebadge of 6 to differentiate it from the coming 6S which physically looks exactly the same as 6. And with this rebadge, 6C as mid-tier will live another 2 years just like 5C.

New line up on Sept 2015
iPhone 6S Plus - $749
iPhone 6S - $649
iPhone 6C - $549 - 4 inch screen, A8, TouchID, NFC, Plastic case.
iPhone 5S - $449
I would like to see:
iPhone 6S Plus with 2GB Ram and A9 chip starting at $749 ( in 16, 32, 128 GB capacities)
iPhone 6S with 2GB RAM and A9 chip starting at $ 649 (in 16, 32, 128 GB capacities)
iPhone 6Smini with 2GB Ram and A9 chip (4 inch screen) starting at $599 (in 16, 32, and 128 GB capacities)
iPhone 6C $ 499 - 4 inch screen, A8 chip, plastic case (only 16 GB capacity)
iPhone 5Sc $399 - 4 inch screen, A7 chip, plastic case (only 16 GB capacity)
I have to carry 2 iPhone 5S phones and would quickly upgrade atleast one to a iPhone 6Smini with 128 GB capacity
if not both. I think that Apple could get away with offering the premium mini only during the S years-
Those who do like the 4 inch size would know to upgrade every other year.
2016 would only see a 4.7 inch iPhone 7 and 5.5 inch iPhone 7Plus.

iPhone 6C $ 499 - 4 inch screen, A8 chip, plastic case (only 16 GB capacity): $150 from the flagship? Apple never did that before.
iPhone 5Sc $399 - 4 inch screen, A7 chip, plastic case (only 16 GB capacity): 5Sc? What is that? and $399? Let me laugh first.

16GB, 32GB, 128GB? Are you still connected with this world because Apple dumped 32GB for 64GB in 6/6+?
You do logistics for Apple based on your need? Please use some sense.
