Still rockin my iPhone 5 here. I didn't buy a new phone because they got so big, and that doesn't work for me. I welcome a new 4" factor, because my next phone will be an unlocked 5S otherwise.

I'm so happy that useless mute switch is gone. So un-Apple like to have a near useless hardware button.

They just moved it to control center so I don't see what the big deal is. I use it all the the time and don't miss the hardware button one bit.

I mean, that's fine, I prefer the feel of metal. I also prefer the 4" screen.

Having previously updated my iPhone every year, I stuck with the 4s rather than going to the 5 as I preferred the smaller format. Eventually I got a 5s, but this is as large as I'm going. So this 'news' is encouraging, as is the number of other posters saying they prefer a smaller screen - there is demand for it.

For the record: I'm male. And my hands aren't small.

It is amusing to look back at the U-turn of those who had previously argued (pre-iPhone 6) that Apple had the size perfect, small was beautiful, etc  Oh how they laughed at those who humped around 'monster' size Android devices - how silly did they look holding a Samsung 5"+ device to their ears?

Assuming this is real, by no means for sure and Apple creates a 4" to the same specs as the 6S version iPhone and iPhone plus how would they price these both on and off contract? Apple's current price structure doesn't leave room for a lower tier first release phone

It's a pain in the arse having no mute switch on my iPad.

If I forget whether I muted it or not, I have to open the Smart Cover, unlock the iPad, swipe up for Control Center, check if it's muted and mute if necessary, and put Smart Cover back on.

With the mute switch, I just flicked the switch. So now, it's five steps instead of one. Apple are competing to out-Microsoft Microsoft.

This is no doubt Ive's tomfoolery in his insane lust to shave one gram off the weight of the iPad, just so he could say it was lighter than the previous generation.

Well, the 3 series grew so big they had to release the 1 and 2 series which were smaller :)

An additional size would be a nice option.

    :-P

Personally, I've actually got good sized hands and long fingers actually, but for me iPhone 5 > iPhone 6! ;) ;)

It just feels better in the hand - it's just right (for me)! Just so right!!! lol

Does it feel right because that's what you're used to or have you used an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus for a sufficient duration (I'd think for at least a few days as your only smartphone) before reaching that conclusion? I wonder because the iPhone 6 is lighter and has less volume than most other iPhones that if you thought the earlier iPhones felt right you may feel the same way about one that is lighter and overall smaller, but with the benefit of a larger display.

PS: I'm in no way making an argument that what feels right to you is in any way wrong. In fact, I tell people the best smartphone, tablet, traditional computer is the one that feels right for them, regardless of what that may be… just don't expect me to assist you if you buy a $129 Android Honeycomb tablet on Amazon that you claim can do "everything that an iPad can do, without paying for the brand name."

    Valid question!

I've had my 6 since shortly after the 6 was released! When I pickup my 5 I still prefer it (much more) though. The 6 is heavier than the 5 too; ~ 15% heavier.

For a larger display, i've got my iPad. I use the phone basically on the go only, and love the camera, but once I'm somewhere (unless its out with friends and in social situations), I'm on the iPad (not Mini) or the MacBook. I take pictures with my phone and look at the beautiful results on a larger display.

Its pretty crazy that AppleInsider has such a high concentration of people with tiny hands.  LOL.

My niece who's 4'10" (shes 10) can easily use the iPhone6 with one hand.

    haha!

and i thought acceptance was the last step?

What if the next 4" iPhone is a plastic case and uses the 2014 components (i.e.: iPhone 6 performance) in the 2015 model? Will that be sufficient? What if the weight and volume increases somewhat due to the removable of a metal casing in favour of plastic? What if the weight and volume of the 2016 Phone 7 to get closer to that of the current iPhone 5/5S; would you consider it over a plastic 4" iPhone using year old components?

(I know I'm asking you a lot of 'what-if' questions but most of your fellow pro-4" iPhone brethren tend not to be reasonable, so I'm taking advantage of your rationale comments while I can.)

It was kind of funny at first, but I'd really prefer if you didn't note every time you reported BF, most of which I don't think are valid reasons for reporting based on AI's stated rules. How about instead just blocking him and then never replying to him?

What!? No sarcastic, dismissive comments about this being a Digitimes report?

My guess is if this report is true Apple will just be updating the 5C with perhaps 5S or 6 specs and just a rename to the 6C. I hope Apple doesn't take the 6 and 6 Plus and drop the price $100 as that would create a very large phone line up. Keep it simple. Have the 4" phone be the free on contract phone, last years 4.7" phone the $99 on contract phone and then the two new phones.
Yes, that's what I've been saying all along. The 5C was engineered to transplant the hardware from the 5S when the time came to leave the plastic phone as the free offering.

However, I disagree with the mid-priced phone. For the first time Apple has three distinct price levels, each with its own unique model (4 if you count the plus). I feel like Apple's move with the 5C is the plan moving forward. Why offer a mid-priced phone that looks just like your flagship? The goal is to sell the most expensive model and make the highest margin, and they do that by compelling the customer to buy the latest and greatest. The 6 will become the 6C, but whether that's just a 6 in a plastic case, or a 6 in a smaller 4" screen, it will be visually distinctive. I tend to think the mid-priced phone will be metal, leaving plastic for the entry level phone, and they've had a year to adapt the 6 to a smaller case. And who's to say the 6 didn't begin life as a 4" design, nor wasn't engineered for a future drop to 4"?

Of course this is just a rumor, so other than the obvious swapping of the 5S into the 5C case, which could easily be how this rumor came about, the 6 could drop to the mid-tier as it always has. But I'm really hoping for a 4" mid-priced phone that's got most of the latest features, if not all (just like the 6 doesn't have all of the features of the 6 plus, screen size notwithstanding).

I have an iPad Air 2 with the leather Apple smart cover.   There's no need to go through Control Center.

After unlocking the device, just hit the volume down button.  If it's already muted, it will so indicate onscreen.  If it's not, holding the volume down button for an extra half-second or so will mute it.

And anyway, forgetting how you last left your device sounds strikes me as cognitive laziness.  If it was truly that critical for you, you'd instinctively self-train to retain that tidbit.
