I don’t understand how that differs from just putting your kids on your insurance. And it’s not like families don’t just let their kids drive their cars anyway.

I don’t see the need for such a distinction, is what I’m saying.

Notice the shift, from insurance companies to Apple's Family plan.

And by-the-by, Apple's 'Find my car' is going to make theft insurance redundant as well. You could actually just phone your car and ask it to drive itself home :)

Basically, car insurance companies are going to be toast.

Eon would head up the electric vehicles division and have a seat on the Apple Board. Done deal....

A charging station out back of Apple Stores?  How many Apple Stores have you been to?  The majority of them here in the US would have no place for such a charging station.  In fact, I have been to about a dozen and know the general location of a few more, and none of them could possibly support that notion.  I can't imagine that a sizable fraction of the res in the world are very different.

    I like that idea.

    “Hey, car, were you stolen?”

    “Sure was, owner!”

    “Mind driving yourself home?”

“I’m in a garage right now, owner.”

    “Just smash through the door.”

“I’ll need voice confirmation of liability for this action.”

“Sure thing. I, [name], command my stolen car to return to me through destruction of a garage door.”

“Command accepted. See you soon, owner!”

True but many Apple Stores are in malls and malls usually have lots of parking. Apple could lease, reserve and equip as many spots as they needed.

A Tesla might have enough power to smash a garage door from a standing start in 1 meter distance but I'd hate to see the repair bill. Why not just send the police over there, then they would catch the the unexpecting thief as well, with no damage to the car?

What is mind-boggling about Self Driving Cars is that they can use data from other Self Driving cars to determine what is around the corner.

Say, your Self Driving Car encounters playing children on the street. This information will be passed onto my Self Driving Car if I happen to be in the neighbourhood (driving the same trajectory). This way your Car are the eyes of my Car, which in turn are the eyes of someone else's Car. The 'constantly checking' is thus shared among Cars.

No software (at least as we know it today) will ever be safe from hacking.

Apple better hurry. I want that Tesla crossover so bad it hurts. If Apple doesn't have a car by the time I need to replace my current auto I am going to have to go with Tesla....

    That's the point.
Ever since a friend's father got stuck in his car because the driver's seats controls decided to go all the way to the front, and in the garage they had to "reboot the seat" in order to release him, I'm thinking "what if you could access this from outside the car?" And there are numerous examples where some form of remote control is possible.
Now, just imagine to see that nice note popping up on your touchscreen saying "we just took over control of your car. In order not to drive off the cliffs in 5 minutes please make a transaction to the following bank account ..."
I suppose that most entrance points for hackers would not be the actual autonomous car systems but their communication subsystems. I already see a huge increase of connectivity w.r.t. cars and this will for sure increase instead of decrease.
Some time back a coworker told me that if cars were as safe as software is today then they'd not be allowed to drive. He meant "safe" in the context of bugs. But it seems we're reaching this test point soon.
Just imagine you stream a malicious song through your CarPlay (or android counterpart) app, receive a malicious text message and some idiot takes over your "self driving" car.
Yes, it's a pessimistic scenario, and we can judge when we get there. I wanted to point out that the challenges to making the car secure from hacking might be equal or bigger than the challenge of self driving in itself.

Very well outlined, and Totally agree. While, as you said, you imagine some WCSs, they're probably not that far off, sort of like House of Cards ;) Welcome the Brave New Future...

Even if by a stroke of sheer luck the Apple Car was announced at the September event, something tells me it would be a year or more before they had one available for purchase. Never mind that it would be an even more limited availability than Tesla’s current situation for, oh, a while.

I'd just love to be in a car that I have no control over tearing around blind corners because another car already scanned that road a few seconds earlier and OMG THERE'S A KID ON R...!!!

At least with a cab you can blame someone when you crash. :p

Why would Apple even consider buying Tesla when for about the same price, Apple can buy ALL OF BMW!

Tesla would be grossly overpriced.  BMW is CHEAP at $54 billion.  BMW can be a subsidiary to Apple. Apple's design staff can then go to work to improve BMW's products.

    Tesla loses money.

BMW MAKES $6 BILLION in PROFIT a year.  Huge difference.  Apple loves profit.
