Silent PC Review has fallen, Team Mac OS X is now #26

Superbowl Sunday and 20 years ago, the Apple "1984" ad was broadcasted to a shocked audience.

In salute to our great platform, I tribute this recent success in memory of that glorious date in history.

As you know Folding@home helps medical science help all of us by giving them the answers they need to solve diseases.

Perhaps one day we will get all the answers and diseases like Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (CJD), ALS, and Parkinson's would be just a old memory.

The competition makes it interesting and gets people to Fold.

Thanks to all our new members and those who made this success possible. Especially our friends here at AppleInsider.

Keep up the fold as SPCR won't stay down for long.

Plus our team name is the name of our great platform and OS, the higher we are on the stats, the more recognition that "MAC OS X" will recieve in the eyes of the scientific community the world over!

We Mac users REFUSE to be ignored, we are not a forgotten platform!

Keep on Folding (for the good of mankind!)

    Sailfish

    PS:

Come join us in our victory at Team Mac OS X forums!

Sailfish, you are a beast of a propagandist. I was won over to Team MacOS X by the gracious second post (and those thereafter), but ended up spending 'bout *two hours* reading the whole thread anyway. I've signing up to Folding@Home.

My 1.25GHz AluPB is folding for #1971! (*crowd cheers*)

The Pande Group at Stanford University must have a couple of psychologists working for them . The points/team/competition angle is proving to be a great incentive I think.

I am folding *p734_villin_sd_h2* at the moment. Its a GROMACS I think since I am running a "FahCore_78.exe". It must be a beta project because it is not on the Currently Running Projects Page.

I'm a teeny bit worried, tho, my proc's at 100% *constantly* and I swear I'm getting a bit of slow down in things. If it forces my fans on, I'll be a loss to the cause. *I* *can't* *stand* *fan* *noise*. Floating around at 58 C at the moment tho, so maybe It'll never hit 62.5 C.

Welcome me over at Team MacOS X Forums!!

Damnit! I gotta finish my essay at some point...

Thanks SonOfSylvanus for joining the team!

And thank you for your complement, I think Team Mac OS X is very good bunch of people and have a well thought out approach for all Mac users who use Folding@home.

I am very proud of what's beginning to be a very good thing with this team and I'm glad you can be part of it as well!

Of course I can't say enough good stuff about our gracious host AppleInsider who is allowing us to help mankind.

To answer your question: The Folding@home app. will use up what ever processor you are not currently using and self scale down if you require more.

Please stop by the forums and post your experience with your setup and if/when the fans do come on and talk with our guys there as I don't have a laptop right off.

    Thanks for joining!

    Welcome to the "Fold"

Yup, it's a Gromacs - a p734_villin_sd_h2o. It's in general, not beta release. Came out of beta fairly recently and is nice and stable. The h2o part = what do you think?

The core is specifically designed to run at "up to" 100%. Almost all folders run at 100% including those with laptops. Degradation in other apps would not be noticeable unless you are very time sensitive - to MUCH less than a second when F@H kicks down to 0% uP use to let another app do its thing. I run several extremely processor intensive apps like PS and notice no difference. Speak Unix? Run "top" and take a peek.

If your fans kick in, post in your TEAM Forums and we'll tell you how to cut back a bit. Let us know your Unix capabilities as there are several ways to do this - some not requiring Unix at all.

Get off the net and get back to that ESSAY!!!<--This is from your family. They just called me.

Still need more more people to join Folding@home.

Just because we finally beat SPCR doesn't mean we beat Mad Cow, Cancer and hundreds of other deadly diseases.

Medical Science and the Stanford University still needs your help.

Team Mac OS X #1971 has now taken the 25th spot from AOA Forums, this was expected a long time ago as they have not been adding any new members.

SPCR is still on our tails, so keep up the Fold!

Anybody else want to get in on the action please come by and see us

I just signed up for Team Mac OS X. The cause seems is a good one, and since I almost never really tax the system, I?ll probably never even know it?s there. It?s busy working away as I type this.

Thanks for signing up! Please be sure to stop by the team forums and register there if you have not already. Lots of fun and fellowship to be had there! Thanks to all that have joined us in the past few weeks. Thanks to the overwhelming response here at AI and other Mac forums we have moved to a new server with greater bandwidth to better serve the team in this scientific endeavor. Look forward to seeing you rising through the ranks contributing to such a worthy cause. Fold on!

You know Mustang, turnout for this project has been tremendous.

People are signing up all over the net and bringing dozens of machines with them.

It's not about a contest between teams anymore.

It's about our PRIDE in our platform and our OS. About Apple, about the Mac and all it represents to us.

Everytime we hear the "Apple is dying" story.

Everytime we get rejected because we are not "a majority platform"

Everytime we hear the frigging word Windows.

We want to strike back in some way, well we now can.

We can beat Windows teams, we can beat PC teams with their cheap boxes, heck maybe someday we can even beat those overclockers with their several years headstart.

We are showing right here, right now, that

WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!

So get behind your Team, our Team, The Mac Team!!

Team Mac OS X fighting against disease. Fighting against Windoom.

Join US and revolutionize the world!

    http://teammacosx.homeunix.com/

And by all means SPREAD THE WORD!

I just started folding for team 1971, but I only have a 400Mhz G4. I have to get back to work now, but I'll check out your forums when I get a chance.

Thanks for joining rogue27, is that the name you are folding under? I also was folding with a 400MHz G4 until I upgraded it to 1GHz. There was a good increase of speed, but the 400 MHz was able to make great strides also, and with Gromacs you should be able to easily meet any deadlines for WU's.

Actually, there was a typo in my last post. My computer is only a G3.

I'm folding under the name "rcarelloATmacDOTcom".

I guess thats a 400 G3, No problem. I believe the slowest you can go is a 233 G3 running on any form of OSX, and still get the projects in on time. The G4 and on with Altivec do have a profound effect on the performance.

But as the motto goes, (mine, that is) use what you have, every bit helps!

    Welcome to the fold! Ken

You're right, "Cheezy Man", a 400 MHz G3 works fine. I have a friend folding with one.

Anyway, chances are that he/she will be buying a dual G5 once he/she has folded for a week or so.... Isn't that what typically happens once one becomes "addicted" to folding? 8)

Many have asked this same question, and to be honest with you, we have no answer.

My suspicion is that a considerable number of AppleInsider members consider your Corporate Sponsor to be a competitor of this site. Why don't you expend your efforts "at home"?

Another theory is that these interesting guys and gals have looked at TEAM MAC OSX and determined that they fit in well with our existing membership.

We are strictly a Grass-Roots effort without any corporate or other sponsorship. This apparently appeals to many.

Now to be honest, my primary motivation has always been to solicit new folders for the Pande Project at Stanford University. That is what this whole exercise is about, isn't it?

Choose a team (hopefully ours) and contribute your otherwise unused uP cycles to an excellent cause. At least give it a try.

MrMaMan, MrMukMan, MrMacMan (or whomever you are) - have you run any WUs past their deadlines recently? Try one and show me where your points are. I suspect that you will have edited your post prior to many seeing it. Too bad that they will not be able to share my amusement.

    MrMacMan,

Yes you are determined. So Are we. I asked Appleinsider over a year ago to join TeamMacOSX when I did and got a fairly good response. Ths time we got a much better response and I am happy that we did. It is nice having some of my old forum friends join the Folding fray. The response has been good for all I would say. And the best part is that the project will get research done faster and on Macs which will inspire them to put more effort into optimizing the mac client. We all know that Mac's are well suited to biological science research and modeling. Just look at BLAST for example. This is another way that we can give back, to the Mac Community, to a worthy project, and eventually to the world when this research comes up with a few keys to Alzheimers treatments or even a cure. Not to mention all the other diseases caused by proteins misfolding....

Oh and if you need to see the post to make you feel better that we are not trampling your thread look Here for it. I really think that overall it is better for people to be folding than not. If they fold for TeamMacOSX then that is good, if they fold for Team MacRumors also fine. These guys here are intelligent, they will make up their own minds. They did the last time I posted, and they are doing so this time as well.

Keep folding! We will find a cure! And show those PC teams that the Mac is not overpriced, underpowered hardware. SPCR Found that out, and now about 10 more PC Teams will as well...

Check it out! That is our teams stats, and if you go to the link for Folding Stats home you will see that we will be quickly ascending through the ranks. If you want onboard that ride come on in, the Cars all warmed up and we got a full tank of gas!

My goal is providing Stanford University with the tools they need to combat many diseases. That's why we are here assisting others in this effort.

We have programmers who are providing helpful software for those who require help running the console version very discreetly and without user intervention, like in user labs situations. Among other helpful software.

We are here to help you Fold, that's all we do.

Come join us and lets give Mac's a voice in the scientific community the world over.

thanks all, keep up the "Fold"
