Indeed, Mac games do need fewer patches. Everytime I intstall Wolfenstein I have to download probably 5 or 6 patches and updates. That is the price you pay for being an early adopter though

Mac gaming has made leaps and bounds from when I left. I do look forward to seeing it improve and developers really taking advantage of the PPC G5. There is so much potential in those CPUs. I mean, just look at the (basically) G3 that powers the GameCube and the graphics it renders.

    G5 Case:

You can actually get a shell for various systems if you try hard enough. Apple has been known to put out system shells of systems for display purposes. Also repair facilities will have shells that were replaced for various reasons and nothing to do with them on occaision. So it is possible.

I'll have to say that the problem porting games to the Mac really has nothing to do with the processor. Even if the port makes extensive G5 optimizations a large limitation will still be the DirectX assumptions made by the original developers, and the quality of the OpenGL translation. That said, a good development house can really do some incredible things when they know what they're doing. When Omnigroup ported Giants they made the wonderful decision of taking advantage of a Mac peculiarity, namely the relative abundance of dual processor machines.

I think that if developers realized that a good many heavy Mac gamers have two processors to play with the problem of processing power will largely disappear. Unfortunately the original Windows code is usually very linear and developed without regard to anything other than a single proc, and of course the extra work supporting multi-procs won't benefit an iMac user and so I'm sure most porting houses are unwilling to put that kind of effort into their work.

As a "gamer" who started his life with the Mac with a 120 Mhz Performa 6320 and an OEM copy of Descent, I have to say that Mac gaming is better than it's ever been. But the point is that if you all you want to do is play games, don't buy a Mac. The overwhelming selection of PC gaming hardware and software makes it very, very apparent that, if you don't count consoles, the PC is the better choice for gaming by far.

That said, I think the whole "MAC sucks because it sucks for games" arguement that I keep on colliding with (and that I've seen on this thread) is complete rubbish, because the whole premise behind the Macintosh is to provide a good, solid, no-nonsense computing experience that centres on the user. It wasn't to provide an "uber-L337" gaming experience. Sure, my Mac won't give me 200+ FPS in UT2K3, but if I can play it well without having it degenerate into a slide show, it's more than good enough for me.

I totally agree with the sentiment voiced by others that to dump all over one platform or the other is outdated. PC's may have Macs beat in terms of gaming (among other things), but Macs have PC's beat in many, many other respects.

I have been feeling a little guilty about causing so many people out there to have nightmares, depression and sickness from my little joke. This is why I am responding to Macosrumors.com. The reaction of people word wide has blown me away. I never intended for such a thing to happen. My in box went from 1% to 100% in 2 days (1300 messages). So many people were pointing out what a stupid thing to do, so many people were telling me of feeling sick, some even said they cried. I felt bad for those people. It was amusing to read things like "I should be hung by my testicles and lit on fire" or the constant reference to "taking a porche and replacing the engine with a KIAs". Most people cried out in horror and carfully pointed out the error of doing such a silly thing.

I am sure you are wondering why this all took place.

    Are the pictures real? yes.

Is it my own G5 case that has been cut and hacked? yes.

Did I give away two G5 2GHz processors (IBM PC 970)? no!

I got a free G5 shell from a buddy of mine and pulled a prank on a mac loving friend. he got so upset. I decided write up a little story, my imagination and warped sense of humor kicked in. I sent it to OC.com just to see their reaction. I honestly didn't think they were going to post it. I cannot believe how fast or how far it has spread on the internet. There are an amazing number of people who are emotionally attached to inanimate objects such as computers. Mac fans seem to be much worse than I ever expected. The G5 is amazing, I would never dream of really doing that

I hope that is true, if it is...that makes my day. But that guy is still a jerk and deserves to be hung by his testicles and lit on fire.

im with you on that. where the heck did he get a "free g5 case"? was his "buddy" a dealer? and if you look at the writing it sounds not like the "kid" we were told it was but like an adult wrote this to cover up for him.

is this the way a "kid" talks?

"There are an amazing number of people who are emotionally attached to inanimate objects such as computers"

    "emotionally attached to inanimate objects"???

that line was NOT written by a "kid"...

he clearly got embarassed by all the emails coming in and then sent this out to salvage his pride. since he admits he lied the first time around why should be belive him now?

I was told about this destruction at a different forum, and, yea, at first, I thought it would be kind of cool. But after seeing what he did to a $3,000 machine that was a GIFT to him, I agree with you all, that is sick. He did that so he could use a different OS to rip CD's and to look at pr0n on the web(gay pr0n most likely). I'm a PC geek, and I dislike macs. But this... this was sick. You can see the reaction of other PC junkies to this here: http://forums.extremeoverclocking.co...0&pagenumber=1

As am I. The guy probably feared his life after those tons of e-mail he received.

Mac loyalists are rabidly insane. Death threats, hate mail, and physical illness? Maybe instead of sharing your woe on this epic tragedy, you should find yourself a girl and enjoy life. Even if it isn't a hoax, if someone drops several grand on a computer, they should be free to do whatever they want with it, fascists.

This sounds like a Counterstrike forum. Not surprising.

Macs are fine, but you don't need to crusade them in place of a life.

You appear to be taking this more seriously than any other poster in any forum I've read so far on the subject.

    Chill.

And, by the way, I'll stretch Godwin's Law a bit and declare your little "fascists" comment the death of the thread.
