If it makes you feel any better Keith "I should have retired 30 years ago" Jackson will be doing the play-by-play for the Rose so get some towels ready for the 4-hour-long blowjob he'll be giving Cal throughout the entire broadcast.
And I'm sure he'll talk about how terrible it is that Texas is playing in the Rose Bowl, so that'll be nice for you, too.
and apparently you are from texas too since you don't even know how the fuck to spell berkeley.
oh wait. you really are from texas
oh for shame, can you ever forgive me? oh wait, i don't care. i misspel shit all the time. <-- see. it's nothing personal. i just don't go over every post with a fine tooth comb. that's what my proof reader is for and she's on vacation. and for the record, i live in dallas because that's where my job happens to be. i grew up outside seattle and i also love the bay area if matters to you so much. why are you making me side with the rat? don't you know how painful it is?
I looked up the numbers from the coaches poll because I did think it was weird that 6 coaches voted Cal either #7 or #8. But you know what? 8 coaches voted Texas either #7 or #8.
Mack notices this bullshit two weeks ago: Crybaby.
Tedford notices this bullshit now: Valiant hero for truth, justice and the American way.
Here is some fun stuff I swiped from a number-crunching Hornfan (we just got math here in Texas, it's FANCY!):
If you change all of those #7 & #8 votes for Cal into #4 votes. (And keep those 8 #7 or #8 votes for UT).
&
If you keep us at #9 in that one AP pollster moved us to #5.
&
If you move the couple of #3 votes for UT in the coach's poll back to #5s. (And we'll leave that #3 Cal vote right where it is.)
&
If you rebuke those 3 AP voters who put UT ahead of Cal and switch them back around.
What do you get?
UT still leads in the BCS standings.
UT's lead in the computers is so dominant that even if we changed every single AP and coaches vote to #4-Cal#5-UT the BCS rankings would be tied.
This mysterious voter conspiracy is a massive pile of sour grapes.
The problem with the blind coaches' poll is that any coach can arbitrarily rank the teams, placing opponents hirer and opponents' opponents lower, to inflate their team's rank. An open poll lets everyone see when you rank the #1 team #35 because you think you should slide up a notch.
I don't know what stats are available now, but an open poll lets you watch trends in the votes. This could even be broken down by geography, conference, or actually having watched the game. (I'd suggest breaking the coaches' votes down by race or gender, but that's a joke, unfortunately.)
Perhaps a coach now could just make their votes public, showing they have nothing to hide? Is a system-wide vote necessary for volunteerism?
Unfortunately, I'm starting to think that the country is not filled with altruistic, honest people. (Granted, I've become more jaded since the recent election, but that's a separate topic.) I think many coaches see nothing wrong with asking for votes or running up the score. Some don't mind late hits or nasty "accidental" personal fouls either. Hell, are academic requirements enforced?
I know where coach Tedford stands on these issues, and his thinking is parallel to the values of the University. Is his new contract that surprising? I'm glad he didn't even entertain other offers. Sure, he could leave at any time, but I'm glad he likes it here and he has his family's support, because all these roots will help keep him here.
I don't know what poor sap is gonna coach Notre Dame. Better hire back Willingham! Better yet, perhaps Buddy Teevans wants the job!
Yes, 6 coaches put Cal at #7 or #8. That is true and it is bullshit.
But 8 coaches put UT at #7 or #8. That is also true and it is also bullshit.
Cal didn't miss the Rose Bowl because of voters. Cal missed the Rose Bowl because of the computers, and the computers sent Texas to the Rose Bowl because Texas had a tougher schedule.
There are valid reasons for not having an open coaches poll, not the least of which being even more controversy and distraction from the actual game when media outlets decide to go apeshit over CoachX voting his rival one slot lower than everyone else votes his rival. This coming from the fan of a team that had even more coaches try to submarine his squad's BCS chances with bullshit rankings.

What is dishonest about asking voters to give your team a shot? Why can't Cal fans just be reasonable human beings, look at the fact that it wasn't the voters that put you in the Holiday Bowl and lay the fuck off Mack Brown and his perfectly reasonable plea that voters treat his team fairly?

Cal fans are doing their absolute best to create unnecessary enemies. Tone down the martyrdom rhetoric.

damn applenutz, i'm sure you're a lot of fun at parties. as the rat said, you need to relax your sphincter some. i'm just guessing, but that can't be healthy.

I think we didn't make the Rose Bowl due to our performance, but at the same time pandering for votes might have helped us. Either way, I'm glad we didn't resort to that, although I don't think doing so is all that bad. Its better to ask for votes than to run up the score. And these two actions are far better than attacking players and the like.
As far as open polls go, I think they're a good idea. Senate votes are open for obvious reasons. Granted, I don't think every coach is a bad egg, but like Apple's Fairplay DRM, an open poll helps keep the honest people honest. Last year the coaches' poll didn't even factor in to BCS, so there was no direct incentive to fudge it. Now that it impacts bowl placement, an open poll it should be.
I don't think an open poll would have gotten us the Rose Bowl, but this impacts the entire sport going forward and I think it should be fixed.

Don't know, why don't you ask Tedford why he didn't start pushing for this a long time ago?

perhaps he has better things to do while in season.
while you're responding to that, why don't you try to label SF and LA on that lame attempt at humor above.

Yes, let's just take the most ridiculous and conspiratorial road.
All the coaches go to these meetings and vote on these things except Tedford so that they can conjure dark magic against Cal.
That makes so much sense I can't belive Cal fans weren't talking about it until just now.

i hear tedford hates jesus and puppies while eating bigmacs in front of starving african children.
I heard he ices all the handicap ramps in opponents' stadiums when they play on the road.
I heard he switches Miller Lite and Bud Lite at the tap in stadium concession stands.
I heard he writes for Will & Grace.
I heard that he loosened the wheels on the Sooner Schooner.
I heard he gave Bevo ecstacy instead of the normal tranquilizers.

dat sombitch. git a rope.
I am trying not to generalize the emotional basketcases as the normal Cal fan, but it's getting more difficult.
What the hell is going on in NORTHERN California?

What a bunch of idiots.
I am sure the Cal QB will be holding a press conference to weigh the relative "class" levels of all involved parties.
