Apple today announced speed-bumped Power Mac G4s, featuring a choice of a single 1 GHz, dual-1.25 GHz or dual-1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 processors with prices ranging from $1,500 to $2,700. The updated Power Macs line also feature FireWire 800 and offer internal support for 54Mbps AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth wireless networking. Based on Apple's advanced Xserve architecture, including up to 2MB of fast Double Data Rate (DDR) Level 3 cache and 333 MHz DDR memory, the new Mac offer up to 21 gigaflops (21 billion floating point operations per second) of performance. The Macs include iLife application and QuickBooks for Mac New User Edition. The 1GHz Power Mac G4 ($1,500) and dual-1.25GHz Power Mac G4 ($2,000) are available now, while the dual-1.42GHz Power Mac G4 ($2,700) will be available starting next month.

Well I just looked all over the site and unless I made a huge oversite they ominously 'forgot' to mention the size of the L2 cache unless it is buried very deep. Now the 1GHz and 1.25GHz are most likely 7455 but the 1.42GHz is due in a month or so. It could be the 7457.

    edit: changed L3 ->L2

There's actually evidence that suggests they aren't The 7457s are supposed have 512k cache, AFAIK.

These lower prices may also mean lower ones for the upcoming iMacs. Can you say $999 entry level flat panel?

Mmm, they did lower the price by $200, increase the MHz and add Firewire 800 with compatibility to Airport Extreme and BT. I would say it's an even exchange and you still get to keep $200 in your pocket.

I thought they might be able to get the price a bit lower for the single processor PowerMac. $2200 for a PM set up(with 17" Monitor) isn't bad though. If the edu discount for the low end PM is only $50 either apple has really small margins on this or they're trying to gouge people before the 970 is released. One last thing, is this the last PM update before the 970s?

I would say yes. Now they can sit back and concentrate exclusively on the 970 architecture. Their Marketing team are already working overtime on the promotional items.

I would imagine not. We will see a 1.6Ghz G4 before we see the 970. Also the 1.42Ghz model must have the 7457 they just aren't telling us. I don't see how they would have a 7455 running 420Mhz faster than Moto says it will.

Why not? Motorola doesn't list the 1.25 GHz 7455, but it exists? Maybe it is a 7457 in the new Power Mac, but if it is, it's a 256k L2 cache version. There's definitely no proof of it either way...

So, any chances that the 1ghz low-end PM will sound less than the last lineup?

I can't confirm where they state the size of the L2 on any of the models. I don't doubt the 1 and 1.25 is a '55 but the 1.42 maybe a '57 until 256KB cache is confirmed. I'll search again.

The new PMs also have 4 USB ports

    where are they?

do they share 2 buses, or does each port have its own bus?

    Read the tech specs page.

What's the deal with bluetooth? You need a 'module' (for $50!) - is that the old external usb dongle or something else? Not terribly elegant either way.

They state 2 on the tower, 2 on the keyboard. Kind of sneaky but what do you expect?

IF this is the last of the PowerMacs before the IBM 970 (which has never been confirmed to be used by Apple) comes out at years end, look for a completely new enclosure, higher prices and a new name. One guess: TurboMac. Any others?

The only thing I find unfortunate about this update is the single 1Ghz on the low end. That pretty much gurantees 1Ghz as the top end for the iMac. I had secretely been hoping for 1.25.

    PowerMac Extreme!!!

I'm glade to see the entry level Powermac below $1500. I think it's important for Apple and it's image.
