[quote]too bad they didn't update the display enclosures ...

i guess i'll be waiting another year for my displa <hr></blockquote>

The mechanics are new They now can tilt and move forward and back. They go with the current CPU design. Wait if you want, and then when the time arrives.... wait again...... and again..... because there will always be updates every 6 months or so. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" />

Why is it sneaky? Why does everyone get like this?! It says 4 USB connections and it HAS 4 of them. The two on the keyboard are very easy to access and if you get an Apple display, you get two more on that! Sheesh!</strong><hr></blockquote>

Yeah, but to use the two on the keyboard you have to plug it in.

Hey calm down there champ. It's just that most people will look on the back of the computer and wonder where the other 2 USB ports are. And if I want to call it sneaky, then that's my prerogative.

Uh, does that mean my PC at work with 2 USB ports actually doesn't have any USB ports, since I have to plug my USB keyboard and mouse into it?

    Goddamn!

too bad that it still has the two processors sharing one bus... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> . so the cpus will probably find themselves even more starved <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> . but okay, let´s wait for some benchmarks here. OTOH, 2 megs of L3 cache sound pretty good. yuh, i guess i´d take one as a present.

    Outsider,

Every PowerMac for the last few years has had 4 USB ports in this way.

You can call it sneaky, but I'd say you've had quite a bit of forewarning.

Man, I am SO tempted to pick up that 23" Cimnema Display for $1899 EDU...Man that would be SWET to go with my TiBook, and is a pretty future-proof monitor to boot. Should I go for it?

Wow....the price drop on the top model is quite significant. In Canada the drop is almost 1000

They should have done this long before.

The $5200 CAD price tag for the last batch of machine is totally insane

The new PowerMacs and Apple Displays were a pleasant surprise upon my return from walking the dog this morning.

If only the 12-inch PowerBook had DVI-out and could thus connect to the beautiful new 20-inch ASD (via DVI-to-ADC adapter)! I bet that the next 12-inch PowerBook revision will make this possible.

The two new PowerBooks were announced three weeks ago. New PowerMacs and displays were announced today. So my prediction is that we will get updated iMacs another three weeks from now, on Tuesday, February 18.

Maybe I'll buy a Cinema 23" display for my MiTi 12" PB SupaDrive. I can't believe it! These updates are coming faster and faster, better and better, and with a smaller and smaller price! By next year we'll be back on top!

The all-duals in the PowerMacs were a good sign that the iMac could get up pretty high with single processors without overlapping the PowerMacs.

What the hell are they doing with the iMacs? They seem to have just punted them. Has there ever been a lack of hardware updates on a Mac for this long? Especially their supposedly bread and butter machine. I wonder if something is wrong. Maybe they can't get hotter processors in that little thing. Or maybe they haven't been selling and so they're going to Cube them. What explains it?

I wonder if the dual 1.42 is still a wind blowing, tinnitus-causing beast...

Check the <a href="http://www.apple.com/powermac/expansion.html"; target="_blank">Expansion</a> tab of the PowerMac page.

If they did actually listen to the audion guys, these should be quiet machines, riiiiiighhhttt???

Are there benchmarks showing how much faster 2MB of L3 cache is than 1MB of L3 cache?

So is this the "Strong Product in the Pipeline"?

hmmmm, I don't know what to make of the low end single 1 gHz. Only a single, but you need that to keep the cost down. Firewire 800, et al. might make up for it. I'm not sure how much lower they could have gone on the price though. Maybe $100 less, but that would be scraping the bottem. The price drops are well worth it though, espically the displays.

    WHERE ARE THE ******* IMACS!?

Yeah the iMac is kind of pathetic. I would've bought one but Apple royally fscked themselves, they definitely pulled a Cube. I bet many people out there are like me: they were going to buy one, then the iMacs went up $100 (!!!) and shiptimes were ridiculous. So we waited for MWNY. Pathetic. A bigger screen for too much money, big whoop.

Now where's the beef? Since iMacs are only 1 processor and Apple trumpets "two brains are better than one" iMacs should have single 1.42 Ghz CPUs. Is that too unreasonable!? NO!!!!!!!!! Single 1.42 Ghz highend I would buy one. Oh well I'll get a MiTi 12" PB. It's cool.

    Also I was wondering how loud those 1.42 Ghz PowerMacs are going to be. <img src="graemlins/surprised.gif" border="0" alt="[surprised]" /> <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" /> <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" />

And how are you going to hook it up to the 12" PB? It's only got VGa, not DVI. The VGA-ADC adapters are expensive.

I am about to buy a mac for work and aimed for the dual 0.867 or its replacement. So when the rather lame single 1GHz came out I was really mad.

Then I realized that the dual 1.25 was only 100 dollars more than the old dual 0.867 and that the 17" TFT had dropped 300 dollars.

So for the price of the old 0.867 and TFT I can get the new dual 1.25 ( better graphical card bigger HD) and the same TFT and have 200 dollars to buy a 512 MB RAM and a 128 MB pen drive.

I think I stand the wait of a couple of weeks for them!

It is weird. I think maybe it is because the dual 867s sold really well (in comparison with the traditional bottom of the range PowerMac) that they have gone back to ensuring the better deal is not the cheapest anymore. I think the dual 867 was a little too appealing and, whilst it ensured sales of this model were good, may have impacted slightly on the sales of the better ones. I still think a dual 867 is a better deal than the single 1Ghz for that price (including the extras like FW800 and 64 MB video RAM). Especially six months on. However, as pointed out, the old dual 1.25 is not that much more expensive now.

However the price cuts are very welcome and should ensure that whilst sales of these machines may not be spectacular, they will probably be pretty solid.
