Aside from being a truncated Mac Pro tinted red with a screenshot of Leopard taped to the side of the unit, the design is terrible. Most prominently is the unadjustable screen angle.
Let see what else is wrong with this picture:
Razor-sharp upper corners
keyboard not on the same 3D plane as computer
Not shipping with Leopard installed
No iSight
No matching keyboard
Butt-ugly
So no. There's no chance in hell that this is the next iMac.

Except that it will ship without Leopard installed.
not necessarily... it could be as hard as the plastic on the monitors apple had in the past, or the plastic on the cube. hard as rock
It doesn't matter how "hard" the plastic is. All plastic has a great deal of flex, much more than any structural metal. It's also far too thin. It wouldn't be strong enough.

i understand that, but the design looks like the studio displays nonetheless
Very little.
But look at the three feet. That is polycarbonate. Yet, each foot is structurally sound, unlike that in the mock-up.
OK, so the new iMac will be not plain white and will be not a display on a stand. But what?
I think the ideal iMac would basically be something that can be both desktop and (semi-)laptop, in a sense. Remember that Apple patent a while back for something that can charge a battery merely via contact between two metal plates? What if there were a mount for the monitor so you could take it off of the stand, along with a USB-charged wireless keyboard? Wouldn't be a true portable in any sense, but if it were a tablet (touchscreen is almost certainly not gonna happen at this point though) it could be neat, I guess. I think an iMac like that is a long way off, though - and I'd rather see more stuff like HDMI in/out than a tablet/touchscreen design.

I always fantasised about that mockup to being made out of glass composite, not plastic.
sorry... by plastic i meant polycarbonate or whatever it's called... that seems to be pretty sturdy no?
and of course it wouldn't be exactly like that mockup, but something along those lines.. i wouldn't want it to be completely transparent i don't think, but that design is pretty neat...

Polycarbonate is very strong, and it isn't easily breakable, unlike acrylic, but, to achieve that, it is VERY flexible. Much more so than acrylic, which is itself flexible.
Ideally, as all information on ergonomics, as well as the manuals for monitors show, the top of the screen should be at eye height.
People tend to put them too high because of the old days when most computers were flat on the table with the monitor on top. Somehow, they think that monitors should be high up.
But, I'm not sure Apple will go back to a monitor that can be adjusted anywhere as much as the old lampshade iMac.
I personally adjust the tilt so that "a line drawn from (my) eyes to the center of the screen, (is) perpendicular to the screen,"* no matter how high the monitor sits.
Geez...if they really want to do a transparent foot they could always resort to transparent aluminum at $15/sq inch.
Okay I kid...its really a transparent ceramic Aluminium oxynitrate. But I believe the shear modulus is superior to Aluminium. Not hard to believe of a ceramic.
It would be worth quite a bit of bragging rights though...my PC is made of transparent aluminium...that said...a tranaparent monitor is kinda silly except as a HUD.
Oddly I don't need a HUD on my desk as I would only see...wall.

Not to say that it is, however from the picture, how can anybody be so certain that it has…
Razor-sharp upper corners
Is not on the same 3d plane: the keyboard could have been placed in front and stood perpendicular on the desktop in front of the screen. However, I do think the screen is much too small in relation to the keyboard if the screen is supposed to be 20" or larger
Is not shipping with Leopard: depends on the shipping dates of both
No iSight: seems that the pic shows otherwise
No matching keyboard: Why not? This is not a packaging photo.
Is butt-ugly. Remember, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I think my sister-in-law's husband is a ugly as a chewed boot. Unfortunately, she isn't into fine leathers.
iMac - Obviously the 20" and 24" will get the redesign, the 17" will be discontinued or will be for educational use only.
headless Mac - I know this dead horse has been beaten into the ground many times, but I think we will see it now because (1) the 17" iMac is not getting a redesign, (2) the Mac mini has not been updated in 329 days (discontinued?), and most importantly, (3) gaming is making a major comeback on the Mac and gamers like to update components. I expect this new Mac to sport desktop components that are easily replaced by the user.
ultra-portable
1 - Think 12" PowerBook with the screen height shortened to widescreen specs
It they made the back computer black and then base out of metal it would be pretty nice. Also the stand should have some slant to it and the screen should bend more. If only it was multi-touch
then i guess there's no way out. we're stuck with metal
No. It just has to engineered so that plastic would work. A laymans idea of what looks nice isn't always the same as what an engineer would come up with..
I personally adjust the tilt so that "a line drawn from (my) eyes to the center of the screen, (is) perpendicular to the screen,"* no matter how high the monitor sits.
While I have nothing against a lower monitor setting (you'll notice that I spoke against monitors that are set too high), they are often difficult to arrange on a desk.
I was really plastered when I mentioned it in an earlier thread.

That's pretty good material, but I don't think that even Apple would go for the expense.

Oh, no, not again!

Hi ! Welcome ! Prepare to be plea-amazed !
Just because your first post was right on target...
The Apple event is all about Mac... iMac or whatever Apple will call this next thing.
Li'l bird has been away
But the sky anounces change
Darker, comes the bird this way
Faster, dives the bird, I say.
"No more pale skin and single feet"
awww...the lil bird...ain't he sweet ?
OMG, can't you control yourself???
Based on "Li'l Bird's" track record: there will be nothing announced on Tuesday.
I always fantasised about that mockup to being made out of glass composite, not plastic.
The only glass composite is fiberglass, and there is no transparent fiberglass. Even fiberglass is too flexible to be made so thin.
and of course it wouldn't be exactly like that mockup, but something along those lines.. i wouldn't want it to be completely transparent i don't think, but that design is pretty neat...
I'd love to see Apple announce a few products at this thing, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

That will be the first complaint, and 1st in a line of reasons why people wont buy it.

It would need a bit more case around the edge.
