  • Apple's epic 'Killers of the Flower Moon' is a hit in theaters

I saw this over the weekend...
Thanks for a well thought out review. Everybody has a right to their opinion but when unsupported its helpfulness is often nil. I very much appreciated what you thought and why.

Black Bird was excellent, but was a mini/limited series by design, so it's goals and challenges weren't the same as a show hoping to have more than one seasons/series.  Taron Egerton has been excellent in everything I've seen him do.

By "Baptiste" did your mean Baptiste with Tchéky Karyo? It only had two seasons but it was very good.

  • Apple FineWoven case review: Not the leather replacement we were hoping for

    Hreb said:
Sorry Andrew -- I'm very interested in whether my next Apple watch band should be leather or FineWoven and unfortunately this review strains credibility.  You report snags, lint, stains, scratches, and other durability issues.  But every photo in the review shows a brand-new, nice looking FineWoven case.  It's a physical product, show the photos!  TTIUWP.
If you want something more real-time, feel free to head into an Apple Store. They change them daily, and they still look terrible after a few hours.
From normal use? Or from people intentionally trying to stress the material? I guarantee you that if you handed me your leather iPhone case I could put some rather large scratches into it with my fingernails in a matter of seconds.
That is a dumbass comparison. This obviously isn't about either case standing up to deliberate abuse. Even if it was, the leather would still be more durable than a fabric case.

I agree the video doesn't demonstrate the criticisms offered, and that should have been done. In fact, most of the video sounds almost alike an add for those woven cases. Leather absolutely will resist staining better than a fabric case. Someone spilled a drink on a table where my phone lay. I heard the noise and turned to see my phone in a spreading puddle. Picking up and quickly wiping it off, none the worse. Maybe Scotchguard for the woven would help.

Sliding in and out of a pocket - leather for the win. These woven cases may be just the thing for some owners. Not for me. If the fabric case is the way someone wants to go, fine. It probably won't be long before we find that AI isn't the only reviewer finding woven cases to be generally inferior to leather, Apple's pervious premium case.

I've had leather cases for some previous iPhones, and found them to be superior in craftsmanship than anything in the third-party market. I'll be looking for something nearly as nice, but I don't expect to find anything as good. If I'm wrong that's ok too.

  • iOS 17 is probably hitting your battery hard today -- but that's expected

On a side note - i’ve lost about 9 to 10 Gb of storage on my phone since the update..  Will any temp or dormant install files for the OS be purged?
I lost at least 20-25GB of space after the update!
What?   That is hard to fathom.   I saw the full download size was 7.7 Gb when connected to cable and macbook, which possibly is compacted.  But either way, 20Gb less space from the update is hard to understand.  I always check before and after when it comes to OS updates and know the space has not come back yet after 18 hours or so.  Obviously the new features require more space.   It’s starting to look like 256 Gb is minimum for me when getting new phone,  applications seem to get bigger over time too.
Hard to believe as well. My phone is 256G and I had to dump some stuff as the OTA download needed 7.7G for a 3.05G update before it would download. Making 8G free space the phone was updated to 17.0 and there's 5.63G available. I thought phones cabled to a Mac needed little more space then the size of the Update file. It all went well.

Only on one occasion was there ever a noticeable slowdown and noticeably short battery life. Restarts (not forced Restarts) didn't help and it wasn't until a .2 or.02 update did battery. Then normal battery life was restored.

  • Apple prepares for the end of leather Apple Watch bands with staff discounts

Synthetic bands are easier and cheaper to produce and produce well, than leather or metal. So it doesn't surprise me that Apple might move away from them. I've never cared for any of their leather bands except the initial $150 that was offered at the time of the first Stainless Steel Watch. That was a well done elegant leather band which hasn't been equaled by anybody including Apple.

There are plenty of leather and metal third party options though most of them have lesser quality and lack elegant styling, commensurate with the cheaper price.

If Apple were to ever break out the sales numbers of their different categories of bands, we'd probably see that the synths outsell the others by a comfortable cash margin.

I'd like to see numbers (wishful thinking) on Hermès specifically. Given their stratospheric prices and the fact that they end up in a "mere" Apple Watch, I wouldn't think they'd offer Apple much in the way of sales.

Leather as any watch band appeals to me but most options look like they were made from a belt that had a huge ostentatious "cowboy" buckle on it. Apple's offering do nothing for me. The Leather Link is showy for my tasted. The Modern Buckle is a clean design but is only available in 41mm for the smaller Apple Watches. The pebble grain leather puts me off.

  • Major 'Apple Watch X' redesign rumored to arrive in 2024

I just wish they would add a round version to their offering.
Me too. I've been requesting this via Apple Feedback since the first iteration of the Watch. If Apple hasn't done one by now, they never will. In saying never, let Apple prove me wrong. Part of the reason is Samsung already doing well with the Galaxy line. I never worry about who's on first, first, but I think Apple gives it some consideration.

Use it for quick bits of info which would fit perfectly fine on a round watch.
Again we agree. Just because it's a "smartwatch" doesn't mean it must be of a shape to make the most possible use of any data that might possibly be stored on it. There are cars that are hard tops and cars that are convertibles. There are cars that are four-door cars that are two-door. There are two-place and four/five-place cars. There are pickup trucks. There are motorcycles that are one or two-place. Yet they all perform some common functions, one of them getting the driver from point A to B.

A round smartwatch can have as much utility for its supporters as a rectangular/square smartwatch can have for their supporters. Use cases are not always equal. One smartwatch doesn't have to be and isn't the same thing for everybody.

I think there are two reasons Apple hasn't/won't make a round watch. They don't think they'll sell enough to make it worthwhile, and Samsung already has the Galaxy line. It's a very decent watch and the only reason I don't own one is it doesn't run watchOS.

Some people will have closets full of white shirts, black suits, black ties, and polished wingtips . Others may choose black T-shirts, jeans, and trainers. There are those who don't subscribe to either.

Apples concession to style is different bands and different color cases. There's the Ultra but that's more than just a style change. So I'd buy a round Apple Watch in a tick.
