Apple on Wednesday announced its "Holiday Cheer" Christmas playlist in the Apple Store app, inviting users to download eight holiday classics for free from the iTunes Store.

Holiday Cheer

The Holiday Cheer initiative is another exclusive to the official Apple Store app meant to drum up interest in the title. Previous promotions included free apps downloadable through the iOS App Store.

For the Holiday Cheer freebies, Apple has selected eight Christmas tracks that can be downloaded for free from iTunes via a unique redemption code. The offer expires on Dec. 31, and the company warns content is subject to availability.

As for the specific cuts, Apple is giving away "Ave Maria" by Il Vollo, "Children Go Where I Send Thee" by Nik Lowe, "Duck the Halls" by The Robertsons, "Joy to the World" by Celtic Woman, Silent Night" by Kelly Clarkson, "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an open Fire)" by Kool and the Gang, "The First Noel" by Mary J. Blige and "What Child is This" by Marvin Sapp.

The Apple Store app can be downloaded for free from the iOS App Store, while further promotions are expected to continue as Christmas draws near.

Hmmm ... The only version that looks decent to me is the Celtic Woman one. I must be getting old.

I think they should have allowed for 8 free songs of the user's choice instead of pushing Christmas songs on us. Some of us don't celebrate Christmas or are religious.

True; I myself am not religious. I do, however, like a lot of what I consider to be "classic" Christmas music. Nat King Cole "Oh, Christmas Tree," Bing Crosby "White Christmas," (even though he was a DB in real life,) stuff like that.

    "subject to availability"?

So they might run out of digitally stored and transmitted content as well?

I don't see it. Is this another example of Apple thinking the world ends at the US border?

Really?  Sounds like you aren't very happy.  Maybe some of us don't give a rip about Christmas.

Maybe you are part of the collective conscious that's been brainwashed into thinking the this time of the year is supposed to be happy for everyone.  Well, it isn't.  Lots of people don't have jobs.  Lot's of people don't have much in the way of money.   Lot's of people don't have the people they care about around to spend time with.  Lot's of people aren't Christian, or Jewish or belong to any other brainwashing religious cult trying to manipulate people into thinking they can go to heaven, even though they committed crimes against other people.

Why do you have to put ME down for not wanting any of these "FREE" songs?  What's wrong with me not wanting to have a religion "PUSHED" on me?  What's wrong with getting 8 free songs of my choice rather than THEIRS?

I just disagree with this and I don't think Jobs would have agreed to this either.

Apple's world wide sales data doesn't exactly support that hypothesis.

Of course it is. Haven't you heard of Gluttism? The beautiful axis where Gluttony and Capitalism meet in a holy orgy of excess. Its lovely.

Not like the sordid Festivus celebrated by heathens and other lowlifes.

Religious churches are filled with heathens.  They accept ALL sinners.  That's what a lot of Christian churches have outside their building.  There's a couple of them in my area that say "We accept ALL sinners"

Pretty disgusting, especially when you hear countless stories of priests sexually abusing children, and other crimes. Heck, there's one church where the freaking priest is a convicted murderer.   It's ridiculous.

Sheesh, take it easy.  If it's people's faith you are taking a cheap shot at, just remember that almost everyone in this world operates on faith in one form or another including strange things such as driving on one side of the road hoping that the guy on the other side of the painted line isn't going to crash head on with you.

This is free music.  It's okay if some or many don't want it.  I wouldn't take insult if Tim decided to pass out free vegan brownies at every store since I'm sure many would probably like it regardless of my taste.

Now if you're saying this is a bad business decision, then stick to facts, don't start up with your tirade against religion, faith and cults.

And how does getting 8 free Christmas (Christian) songs going to give someone cheer that doesn't celebrate Christian holidays?  To me, that's insulting and offensive.

I downloaded a free iTunes Holiday Sampler (read Christmas) on 12/10/2009.  Jobs didn't have a problem with that one.

I think it's insulting to people that don't celebrate a specific religion.

What's wrong with not wanting to be part of a religion that's based on hypocrisy?  That's what they're based on.  If God created a religion, then why are there so many different ones with differences between each one.  God didn't write the Bible, even though the religious leaders want you to believe otherwise.

If for a Christmas promotion, Apple were to offer 8 free songs of your choosing you would happily accept? I have no doubt you would. Of course, it would make you a hypocrite to take part in a Christmas promotion but I am sure you wouldn't let that stand in your way.

    Merry Christmas <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

I don't remember that year in what they gave out.  Personally, i find it offensive and insulting.
