I'd REALLY hate to be married to someone like you.

I think this is what I remember. That date would be about right for when I had most of my classes with the professor I remember talking about it with. I think the conversation went along the lines of...

me: Sony has announced a DVD that uses a blue laser and has enough room for 2 hours of HD.

Professor: Well, you'll pardon me if I believe it when I see it. Sony likes to make announcements that they never deliver on.

I really want PS3 format to win!... I want to be able to switch back and forth between kick ass first person shooter games to classic casablanca blu-ray movie in a heart beat. hahahaha

Perhaps, this is what you would like to hear from everyone.

Thanks again for your contributions to the thread. You're posts always manage to make the "obliviot" list.

On the side note, you may not want to be married to me, but what you may not know is that everyone do not want to be married to you. Don't be an obliviot.

Walter I was doing no such thing and it would be really great if you could leave your childish ego out of this thread. I mean you talk about bitemymac and how " it must be great to be him " but listening to your vacuous comments is almost painful.

Sorry if you can't wrap that childish mind around a little analogy from history.

Really honestly you really are starting to sound like your typical intenet troll who doesn't care about what he's talking about. The only thing a troll cares about is appearing clever and getting in the last word.

As far as the subject matter goes I gave reasons why DVD won over VHS and why it's different with BR ( or HD DVD ) vs DVD. What I was saying is that back then ( before DVD ) Laserdisc was clearly superior to VHS picture wise and the consumer still stuck with VHS because it could record. So the same thing could happen with DVD even though BR is superior. That's why it has to be made as attractive as possible ( lower the price etc. ). It's like an incumbent president. People tend to stay the course or what they've already invested in.

    God! Can you even read?

I think you're bit of a troll feeder yourself. Try being more of a troll to a troll, it's actually quite entertaining.

Perhaps, this thread may find it's way back to being on topic once the troll feeding ends, eventually.

Don't know about him, but it's great to be me. Even if it is -28ºC outside.

Wow, jimmac must really be new to the thread. Everybody else stopped asking the Blurayers to check their egos at the door years ago.

It's simply not possible. Their whole world would have collapsed if Sony's little DRM machine had lost.

When!? That would really piss me off as a Netflix subscriber. Especially since I'm hearing about it from you and not from them.

Thanks Frank. Looks like I can still get HD DVD titles through the end of the year. I imagine as existing discs wear out, or are lost or damaged they won't be replaced though. I hope to finally have Blu-ray by the end of the year.

Netflix dumps HD DVD, opts for Blu-ray

Even MacWorld jumped on this story. Another nail in the coffin. So many of those HD-DVD sales were to netfix for it's subscribers, but the numbers are just dwindling down for HD-DVD. I'm wondering when Paramount, and Universal will start producing BluRay disks? My guess now is within two months. So by April we'll hear something.

The thing with Netflix had to have at least something to do with the demand they were seeing as well. Why would they arbitrarily drop the support if their customers were asking for them in sufficient numbers?

I know when I got my PS3, I looked at my queue and updated it to switch as many titles as possible to Blu Ray. I can imagine an HD DVD owner would do the same.

On a separate note, I wonder what Netflix does with the movies when they've finished with them. The DVDs can be pretty scratched up (ususally quite playable but not very appealing). Do they eBay them or just trash them?

They sell them. It is kind of hidden though, down at the bottom of the page is a list of links, and after "QUEUE" is "BUY DVDs". Many of them are $5.99.

Great news all. One step closer to the offical demise of HD DVD.

I agree with you onlooker, I look to hear something from Paramount or Universal by or in the 2nd Quarter.

The Netflix announcement is a shocker and definitely catastrophic for HD-DVD. Now maybe Netflix will increase their stock of of BD titles and the long waits will disappear from the queues.

It's also good news for those who wish for only format in the hope it'll lead to wider adoption by those people who now have HDTVs.

Breaking News: EGM Confirms Universal's Exclusivity Drop from HD DVD

    http://www.thegamersthought.com/2008...niversals.html

    Quote:

In EGM's March 2008 Cover Story, EGM clearly signals what every Blu-ray fan has been waiting for: Universal Studio's exclusivity drop from HD DVD. Many suspected with Warner's recent announcement of exclusively supporting Blu-ray that Paramount would follow (being that Paramount's contract with HD DVD cited a clause stating that if Warner defected, Toshiba would allow the studio to diffuse their current 'relationship'). However, that was not the case. Paramount publicly noted that their exclusivity support with HD DVD would remain - as did Universal - after this year's excruciating CES for the HD DVD camp. It seems as though the tables have turned indeed.

With Universal dropping exclusive support with the HD DVD camp, this will allow the studio to release it's films on both high-def mediums. The pros in this move will allow the studio to specifically see which format will perform better, in disc sales, which will later evolve into a concluded decision that will assist Universal in choosing the correct format to support exclusively. With dropping HD DVD support, it is clear that Universal has been listening to the consumers. With Blu-ray internationally dominating the high-def market, HD DVD seems to be slowly dissipating into a mist of absolute abandonment from both consumers and studios. Consumers have been returning their HD DVD players clearly citing which format has won, and studios around the world have been continuously announcing their exclusive support for the Blu-ray format stating that support for the HD DVD medium will no longer be taken into consideration, again, declaring a winner.

With this announcement, Blu-ray owners will now have long-awaited titles (i.e. The Bourne Trilogy) that they have been waiting for - if Universal announces to release for it, that is. Everyone has already chosen the obvious winner of this format; apparently Toshiba has yet to come into realization that its format is no longer being considered by the media industry. Consumers and movie studios alike have declared whom they will exclusively be supporting in the future. Toshiba needs to get their heads out their asses and go out with dignity. All they're doing is confusing uneducated consumers and trying to squeeze out a buck for their own benefit. I, for one, won't be supporting them at all. Yaris, out.

I'm still filing this under RUMOR until there is something official from Universal. Makes me wonder what March has in store for the high-def landscape though.
