I'm looking at the photos on the other page and these laptops look pretty much the same as the last gen. What am I missing?
It does look similar but there isn't that much latitude when it comes to laptops. As I think everybody suspected it would the keyboard has finally changed. It is now like the MacBook / iMac. That alone will change the look a lot. I suspect the most significant change will be the multi touch features. Well, the spec changes might be more significant... And there may be color changes. That's always exciting. And something to beat what came before such as 'the fastest ever', and 'the thinnest ever...'.
But yeah... not THAT much to get excited about perhaps unless you have been waiting for ages for an update in order to buy. Then it would be VERY exciting.

Exactly. Also, let's not forget that little differences can be key - the PowerBook/MacBook Pro form factor was almost perfect; there were three problems that this update will hopefully correct:
The grey keys with white backlight meant there are some lighting conditions under which the backlight makes it harder to see the keys. With this new keyboard with black keys there will be a proper contrast between key colour and backlight colour.
The internal HDD is very difficult to get at. Hopefully this update will provide something similar to the current MacBook's accessibility.
The latching mechanism has moving parts and is fragile. The MacBook and MacBook Air's magnetic latch is simpler and more elegant.
Then of course there's the usual tech-spec upgrades.
I'd even dare to say that that high top-end price even suggests there might be a blu-ray option, although it could be pointing to an SSD option instead.

I don't think we'll see Blu-Ray support till Snow Leopard.. Leopard and iLife apps do not currently support Blu-Ray authoring so it'd be more than just a hardware upgrade.
EDIT: Also, blu-ray would likely debut on the flagship Mac which is the Mac Pro. Mac Pro updates generally happen in Jan/Feb. Macworld should usher in new Mac Pro's, Snow Leopard and iLife 09 with Blu-Ray support.
Yay! This'll be my first Mac purchase. Hopefully I'll quickly pick up on how to use the OS. It's easy right?
I'd say it's easier to learn than Windows, but it you know Windows then you have unlearn some actions so there will be some frustration to get over. The best thing to remember is, if it seems like it's too complex or difficult compared to Windows, then you are doing it wrong. The forums at MacOSXHints.com is a great resource.

They have updated iLife apps at these events before, but you'd think that the Pro Apps would get the support first.
I remember last time there was an Apple announcement to make, people were hyping it up like crazy only to be let down. Should we continue this hype up?
In reality I'm speculating that they're just going to change the covering the macbook, give it some upgraded options and make it cheaper, not really giving any other real new hardware functions.
I'll gladly eat my words when they release anything more than that.
I am so freaking excited! I am a PC user that is sick of Windoze! It makes me sick how Microsoft comes out with an OS and takes 1 or 2 more years to make it actually work right! (Think XP Service Pak 2 and 3, and Vista). I hate having to reboot for EVERYTHING.
I'm a photographer that is growing it into a side profession and my wife and I are going to start a family w/in the next 1-2 yrs and we'll be getting a camcorder prior to that chapter and shooting a lot i'm sure! I'm so looking forward to being able to handle all that much easier on a Mac!
I'm also bursting at the seams with lack of storage space so I've wanted to buy a new external drive but have been holding out for the Mac first so to avoid formatting frustrations.
Now i can kill all birds with one stone, the holiday season! Also, my company has an EPP for Apple and we just recently got bought out by a PC company so I don't know how long it will stick around! Perfect timing for all of this and I'm so glad the wait is OVER!!!
I just want to know what brand of coffee you're drinking.
So does anyone want to speculate that these laptops will include whatever tech that Peter Oppenheimer referred to in the last quarterly conference call?

Yeah, I'd like to think it's a multi-touch glass trackpad, although that seems to be a pipe dream at the moment.
Ironically I don't drink coffee! I hate it. I only drink sugar free, carb free XS Energy Drinks and I haven't had one of them today yet. Check em out here www.xsblast.com. I order them from here www.drinkinperfection.com

Perhaps a glass trackpad like the iPhone?

As long as you don't try and make it work like Windows, yes.
